April 16, 20197 yr Cleaned out a shed for an ol boy and found this odd shaped hammer. It is stamped with 3/4 and a makers mark which I can't make out, but thought someone here might know what it is and what it is used for?
April 16, 20197 yr Is the smaller rounder part three quarters of an inch? One of the experts will come along with a better idea. But to me it looks like a handled punch. The mushroomed larger part looking to be where the tool would have been struck.
April 16, 20197 yr Author Yes the round part is 3/4 and indeed it has had the square end beat on. I didn't figure it was a blacksmithing tool, but could be wrong. It might become a blacksmiting tool though some day.
April 16, 20197 yr A nice find to be sure. Just be sure to clean up the mushrooming. It can lead to easier chipping and is a safety concern.
April 16, 20197 yr Ah yes, I remember what that is. I used one in Kindergarten to get those square blocks to fit into the round holes.

May 15, 20197 yr It is a handled punch, but it may or may not have been originally used for blacksmithing. Sometimes punches like that were used to knock bolts and alignment pins out of metal assemblies like machinery, bolted girders, railroad track splices, etc. It certainly can be used for smithing, however, but do grind off the cracked parts. You do not want a sliver of metal coming off and flying across the shop. My cousin Tommy almost lost an eye that way.
