Take the hose and fitting to the local propane or natural gas appliance supplier and ask them. If it's not worth having a fitting swaged to a hose to you then the craft isn't either. There have been several methods suggested so far. You're so invested in not understanding the thing you're looking for things to go wrong and you're being successful.
