Gunnut
I'm a noob just getting started and I'm dirt poor. I have a fork from a 10k# reach truck and was wondering if this would be an ok start for an anvil?
MrDarkNebulah
Yes it would work allright as an anvil. I've seen many of the well seasoned veterans suggest fork lift tines as anvils. Pretty much, if you hit hot metal on it, It's an anvil. Good luck with starting out! and welcome to the forums!
Everything Mac
Yup, those are good steel and make excellent anvils. - you're best mounting it vertically if possible. That way you have more of the mass under the hammer and it will act like a much larger anvil. All the best Andy
ThomasPowers
Re forklift tine anvils: May I commend to your attention http://www.marco-borromei.com/fork.html And I freely confess to being the Thomas mentioned in the article.
BIGGUNDOCTOR
What is the length of fork that you have? If I was to make one I think I would do it by cutting, and welding it up into a block depending on how much material I have to work with. Cut a couple of sections and lay them down edgewise, then weld one section flat across the top of the long edges. The forklift companies that responded to my inquiries said thet they use different alloys for different weight classes, but that the smaller lifts like this, they were in the 4140 / 4340 type of steels. Gunnut
I'm not sure about material but I do know they are off of a 10,000 # rated reach truck and look very similar to what Thomas posted. I have two of them. Great hopefully I can get to my father in laws band saw this weekend.
jukejoint
They make great striking anvils, the end that attaches to the mast
johnnie
Hi Gunnut, I got hold of some huge fork tines and have used them for all sorts. Even made power hammer dies out of them using nothing but a grinder. So long as the steel is hot they work fine. Great for making tongs to. Have fun. ThomasPowers
How huge is huge? I still have the 180# mate to the one shown at http://www.marco-borromei.com/fork.html and it was quite big enough for me to haul out of the woods by myself. Gunnut
Welded the face and center riser together today as I spent most of my time with the portable band saw cutting that's all I had time for before the family BBQ.
Gunnut
Ok fellas here's what I got. I don't have any ball bearings but it had good rebound with a 2 pounder opted for a smaller side plate and also have the bar from the forklift carrage which I'm thinking about using as a horn.
