the iron dwarf
all vices were made by somebody years ago a blacksmith may have made his own, then people started to specialise and make what they were best at, trading what they may with others
John McPherson
This topic has been covered many, many times in the archives. ABANA has an article on fabricating a vise from modern materials, as well as a guillotine tool. etc.. http://www.abana.org/downloads/education/VerticalVise.pdf
Jim Coke
Greetings Ernie, The material cost to construct one would far exceed that of one purchased. There are so many out there in flee markets and on the internet . You could just start with one that is a cast off for parts and make the repairs .. If you lived closer I would give you one for a starter.. Good luck Forge on and make beautiful things Jim

Ernie42141
Post vice is done!!! Not bad for less than $20.
Smoggy
Looks like it should work fine, I like the fact that it's about as simply made as one could imagine. Does it open when unscrewed? i.e. are both jaws registered to the thread negating the need for a spring.
Ernie42141
Yep opens and closes like regular bench vise. The screw is out of my broken one. All I bought was scrap tube
Mark Ling
you could think about making a spring for it. it wouldnt be that difficult to do though its not necisary. littleblacksmith
Ernie42141
It is self opening. Uses screw parts out of broken vise with bushing to open
BIGGUNDOCTOR
One of the more interesting ones that I have seen used the Twin I Beams from a FORD truck, and recently someone posted one that I had thought about. It was made from forklift forks.
Ernie42141
Forklift forks??? That would be one monster strong vise. Be he'll to drill and cut though.
BIGGUNDOCTOR
They are not that hard to drill, I have drilled a couple for trailer balls. Strong is good for a post vise.
