marrt
I also have a Hercules that I believe was made by Hay Budden. It looks exactly like a Hay Budden and my copy of Postman's book mentions that Hay Budden made some Hercules branded anvils. That's the extent of my knowledge. Wish I knew more myself about Hercules anvils.
marrt
Thought I'd add a few photos of my Hercules. This anvil came from Judson NC before the land was taken by the TVA as the watershed for Fontana Dam.
101 H-B
Hello, Yes your Hercules anvil in the pictures was certainly made by Hay-Budden. The stamp at the waist under the horn and ser# on the right front foot confirm it. Sorry, I do not have any other information about who or where the hardware company was that used this brand name. If I come across something I'll let you know.
VaughnT
That's a dead sexy anvil! I don't know if it's the narrow waist accentuating the lines, but that horn is really impressive. The little bit of belly, that gentle curve on the underside... I bet she turns a fine loop! Congratulations on a wonderful find. She's a perfect size, and in immaculate condition; no doubt she'll serve well for the next few hundred years....

jaywmiller1972
Todfay I ran across a 100+ lb anvil. Stamped Hercules on the side, ridiculously heavy. I got it for a fair price and I was wondering what you all thought abpout it. I really like it and am thinking about adding it to my shoip, but if it is worth a few bucks. I might sell it. Can anyone tell me what it may be worth?
humphreymachine
I recently saw one stamped "AMERICAN" in the same place.
VaughnT
Good looking anvil, Jay. Value depends on condition as well as location and how you advertise. It would be fair to ask $1.75/lb as a minimum, though.
ThomasPowers
Do you want that in Euros, Pounds, Pesos, Rand, Rupiah,..... Face looks nice, (remember that any welding, grinding or machining on the face tends to *LOWER* the value!)
ianinsa
So Thomas, have you considered that in all those currencies it would be /kg :P Of course you have ;) just what was I thinking :D Ian

GMoore
I am an amateur smith, and, I volunteer at the Sandy (Oregon) Historical Museum. I am trying to document our blacksmith collection. We have a Hercules anvil (marked Hercules OLD .....). The anvil appears to be in the range of 100 - 140 lbs (it is fastened down and on display) and the word(s) following "OLD" are covered by weld marks. Any help (date of manufacture, location of manufacture, HB, I suppose, but would like to find out the model, anything else). Thanks loads. ThomasPowers
Anything on the front of the feet under the horn? OLD is probably part of Solid Wrought found on a number of different anvil brands. Where are the pictures???
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Pictures of it will help. If it was made by HB there should be a serial number on the foot under the horn which should date it. oops beat me to it Thomas.
