Really glad you didn't burn yourself out Cody, close calls suck. Of course close calls are a lot less sucky than  the alternative.

 

What kind of forge do you use? Do you know what happened? Was 911 involved?

Had my fire brick forge setting up on bricks on a stump. Locked up shop. Stump caught fire and burnt the center out of it luckily the stump was the only victim and the fact that my shop smells like smoke.

Nicely dodged bullet Cody. Keep it up, we all dodge bullets every time we light a fire we're dancing with the dragon and occasionally you WILL get IT. Day three at the recent clinic with Gordon Williams was open forge day where everybody who wanted gave things a try. One of the guys was straightening a coil spring. Cutting sections with a hot saw and straightening them on the anvil to make tools, eye punches, chisels, etc. etc.

 

I was making a leaf to try Gordon's tooling and techniques I turned back to the table the forge was on to get a veining chisel and forgot my #1 rule for working in a hot shop, I just picked the chisel up. Gee, it wasn't the chisel, it was one of the pieces of Spring that'd just been straightened and was probably close to 1,000f. I've seen flame puff of my hide before and it never ceases to HURT. Fortunately it was almost red hot, if it'd been around 400-500f and it would've stuck till I got it peeled off and really done some cooking. As frightening as it is to see two little balls of flame come off your fingers and see and smell the smoke curling off the charred hide it didn't burn deeper than the skin.

 

Fortunately Pat is a caster and has serious burn 1st aide supplies, so after I'd hit the quench bucket to get my fingers to stop smoking I ran cold water on them for a good 5 minutes and went in for first aide. Pat has Silvadine salve. Silvadine is THE stuff, 1 1/2 weeks and I only have one small pink spot left on my thumb from an ugly burn you only want to see on a seared steak.

 

Not to highjack the thread, I'm just saying this stuff happens to everybody. I've been playing with fire and hammers all my life and every once in a while I do something careless and the craft WILL remind you not to take chances you don't have to.

Fortunately my case ended as yours, a smoke filled garage or workshop and a reinforced fear & respect for fire.  Thank you for posting this, it's a good reminder to check your area for fire hazards and safety concerns.

For years my only non-intentional fire was from the sparks off the arc welder.

I have been forging titanium a bit the past two years and the grind sparks on that metal is very intense. It can light a fire 30 feet away if you are not watching....

 

By far the most dangerous is what you experienced Cody...you turned the wood to charcoal and charcoal can smolder for many many hours and seem fine, then ignite. After a bloomery smelt all the waste goes into a metal drum full of water...charcoal and all.

 

When I shut down for the day I turn it all off and then wait a bit. Sweep the floor, put away tools...the reason is to find the no-see-em flame source. Five minutes is cheap insurance.

FYI for a commercial job site, the fire watch time here is 1 hour.  meaning  no matter how late it is, one person stays around to watch things cool off for at least one full hour.

....Close one...you were lucky. I wasn't so lucky few years back. Burnt the shop to the ground where I had to start over again. It's strange looking back now but it was entirely my fault, I was careless and have learned my lesson. No body was hurt so I take heart from that. Things can be fixed & repaired and so that's what I have been busy with for the last 4 years, rebuilding & repairing my workshop.

 

I'm nearly at the stage where I can begin some projects again, and boy I can't wait. It'll be real nice that. I'm looking forward

In industrial shops in the US OSHA rules require a hot work permit for any hot work not in a designated hot work area. Fire watch while the hot work is in progress and at least 1 hour after.

Factory Mutual requires much longer times and sign offs.

So unless your shop meets the Designated hot work area and has NO combustable materials a post hot work watch is needed.

I try to always have some post hot work filing or cleaning or just sit and cool me and the shop and reflect on what went right, what went wrong and what to change next time. Cools me and the brain and the shop.
