January 30, 201313 yr Hello all! Here are a few new tools I forged recently. The tongs are made from 5/8 coil spring, the touchmark is w-1 and the nail header I made from a piece of an old spud wrench. The rivet-type tongs I should have made longer as I aimed to have an integrated tong clip, but I made a misjudgment... I had fun ( As I always do ) making these and please let me know what you guys think...
January 31, 201313 yr Author Thanks guys! Pete46: I didn't pinch him ha ha! My dog is spoiled to death in good treatment. He really does have an odd personality though... If I make certain noises he shows his teeth like that :D
January 31, 201313 yr Nice clean work, well done and well finished! Tell me, what is the story behind your touchmark? It looks beautifully designed and I am sure that there is some significance as to why you chose it.
January 31, 201313 yr Jacob, Your tongs are very nicely done, I really like the way they flow around the rivet! Nice work! Albert
January 31, 201313 yr Nail Header is a inspiration to me to go out in smithy and try t make one and do some square nails.... Found this tutorial on Nail Header and nail making very interesting.... http://www.piehtoolco.com/Product_Info/nailheading.htm Dale
January 31, 201313 yr Author Thanks fellas! :) Ridgewayforge: The touchmark is actually a Rune called Fehu, It stands for F which I use for my last name. I am of course proud of my family name, but also of my families history that most likely leads back to Viking and Anglo Saxon culture on my Fathers side. Runes were an ancient alphabet used by these peoples; the Germanic peoples. ( A less boring F ) ;) Macbruce: Wolf jaws... Yikes that Im sure will be a challenge, but one I'll have to try soon just to say "I can" Dale M. Thats a great article! I found that quote a while ago and found it to be quite informative since I haven't spent much time making nails... Thanks for sharing it!
February 2, 201313 yr I thought I recognized that touchmark. Looks like you've got some of the ol' creative fire to go with it. :P
March 9, 201313 yr Author I ended up changing those tongs. I kept having to look for that dreaded tong clip buried in the pea gravel floor of mine ha ha!
March 12, 201313 yr Author Fehu is also the rune for wealth and prosperity. Yep! A good reason to stamp my tools with it! :) I need to make a smaller one soon...
