JHM Competitor Anvil

Recommended Posts

Hello - Just wanted to share my recent find.   I was recently looking at a 130 pound Fisher but decided against it for several reasons.  Then I stumbled onto this JHM Competitor at 260 pounds - What a monster and I couldn't resist.  It is in great shape and I feel I got a great deal on it as it is barely used.  Here are some pics of my setup.  You can also see my old anvil that I had to weld a new base to.

At Mike Romo - Thanks - Stand is stacked plywood laminate with sand in middle - It cam with anvil and weighs around 80 more pounds.  There are steel strips inside that were tapped so it could be bolted down to stand, but two are stripped, so I added a heavy chain to hold securely

Thanks Steve.  Looks like a beast.  So, basically squares stacked with hollow center and filled?  Pretty slick.  Sand is a good medium and Lord knows we have plenty in NM, but I think I am going to avoid it due to the resentment I have built up with all the strange sand that already blows into my garage.  Haha

I think I am going to go with a design that Avadon posted.  It will give me an excuse to do more project work with my welder.  Yeah, I know, a glutton....

I know the shop that I hammer at has 6 JHM anvils and I think they're all competitors.  They're all pretty good anvils, even after 20 years of ab/use generated by someone who is more than likely just learning how to use a hammer.

There are a couple that have sharp spots under the horn from missed strikes of years gone by, and all of them have the odd mark on the face.  No chisel marks, torch marks, or serious sway/face damage to any of them though.
