Something to distribute the impact from the blows is definitely good. The foot of my own vise rests on a 3" x 3" steel plate that sticks out from the bottom of the vertical I-beam that makes up the main part of the stand.

    You need something to trap the bottom of the leg so it doesn't slip against the direction of force you are using on it.
