March 20, 201214 yr Lets see how crazy this one goes. http://www.ebay.com/itm/EXC-COND-HUGE-8-IRON-CITY-190-Lb-Post-Leg-Vise-Blacksmith-Anvil-Forge-Tool-/190655462336?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c63f37bc0
March 21, 201214 yr Howz that happen?? What do they do with a $500+ vise? Will it really look that good in the flower garden?
March 21, 201214 yr I remember someone saying that a leg vise is basically an anvil, as such the bigger the vise, the more mass.
March 21, 201214 yr Big vises are for big work. If you were forging and filing a lock turning that large heavy handle would get old fast.
March 21, 201214 yr Don't forget to add in the shipping cost! "approx $148" Personally I'd say that if you are doing work that takes an 8" vise you might be better off looking into more powered equipment and you'd better be using strikers and not working alone!
March 21, 201214 yr Yep agreed, I have a couple big vises, they are cool to look at but no fun at all to use...
March 21, 201214 yr I use my big vise (180ish pounds for twisting 1" bar stock.). The long handle allows you to really crank it hard.
March 21, 201214 yr matchless had a 8" vise weighing way over 270 pounds on there a while back..A real monster..It went for $1500.00
March 21, 201214 yr yeah Kyboy i loved the pic he had up with that vice holding a 80lb anvil in its jaws
June 15, 201213 yr Just to revisit this...it looks like the vise didn't meet the reserve price...at $866. I wonder if he sold at that price after the auction ended.
June 19, 201213 yr Just to revisit this...it looks like the vise didn't meet the reserve price...at $866. I wonder if he sold at that price after the auction ended. Ive noticed several of his big money items havent been meeting the reserve price lately..he has had to relist hammers several times Ive noticed...Im not saying that in jest or poking at him in anyway either...I just think the number of people willing to pay huge ammounts of money for these items are far smaller than the ones willing to pay a respectable price...The economy is hitting everyone, even ebay vendors..
July 10, 201213 yr I dont have a leg vice but isnt 190 pounds a little low for an eight inch? Just wondering.
July 10, 201213 yr Yup some folks see a big price brought by a special item and then are amazed that their item doesn't equal it---seller wasn't happy with $100 an inch of jaw. My last 6" vise cost me $50 at a blacksmithing meet about 2 years ago. At that price I couldn't turn it down even though I had to carry it about 1500 miles home, got a 3" vise at the same meet for $20 that's been dated as "pre 1800". I was happy!
July 11, 201213 yr http://www.ebay.com/itm/Huge-132-Pound-10-Inch-Jaw-Post-Vise-Blacksmith-Anvil-/120947557862?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c290945e6 How about this monster?
July 11, 201213 yr if you read the description its only a 7 and a 1/4 inches it opens 10inches still a nice looking vice
July 11, 201213 yr Yeah that guy doesnt know much about vises if he is calling that a 10".... It is a nice looking vise though.... I have a 8" columbian and a 9" vise that came from the Geneva steel mill... Both are real close to 200 pounds.... The guy who had the ebay listing for the vise in this thread offered me $1200 for the 9" at one point and I turned him down (in hind sight I should have taken it when I had the chance but thats the way it goes)
July 11, 201213 yr I have a friend in N.C who bought a 8" vise from an antique store for $200  Ive never seen anything bigger than 4 3/4" here local before..Other than my own 6" vise and it didnt even come from here..
July 11, 201213 yr Here is a nice one and it is cheap for now...http://www.ebay.com/itm/vintage-blacksmith-vise-/140794539423?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20c8022d9f
July 11, 201213 yr Id like to have a bigger vise, my 6" is about 90 pounds..Sometimes I need to drift large axe heads over my vise and bigger is always better for that..
July 14, 201213 yr Best of luck to you, it is out of my budget right now and trying to tell the wife that I need another vise after -will not work. She knows that I have three already and "Why on earth would you need another one?", even though this is about a 1/3 heavier than my 5 3/4". Send me pictures if you get it.
July 20, 201213 yr It said it had no bids. Too bad i didnt see it a week ago, i would have bought it.
July 20, 201213 yr Id say the lack of a bracket scared off the collectors and the price of shipping a 150 pound vise scared off everybody else..LOL
