urnesBeast
BP1048 Side Draft Chimney | Blueprints 1000 I am planning on using the above side draft. Has anyone built one of these that went through a building inspector. If you have knowledge in this area, that would be great. I used this in my first smithy, and it was great. I considered it safe, but I want to know what code inspectors think. Doug
Steve Sells
I have, but building and fire codes, and their enforcement is local specific, so not a lot or room for on-line help. call your local office.
urnesBeast
I am friendly with the firemen, I was going to stop by tonight. Even though things are local, what was your experience. Doug

pkrankow
Not an inspector, but there is code for fireplace chimneys through wall or ceiling. You can probably look that up for your area, or use national code if local code is lacking. You can also contact a chimney sweep and ask them about the codes, but they may want a consultation fee. Welcome to The Wood Heat Organization Inc. has some information, but I don't remember where on the site. Phil
Bad Creek Blacksmith
My experience was that there wasn't any codes on forges. So I installed my chimney a little bit like a wood stove and used a 10" floor duct for the chimney. I have a side draft forge but the chimney goes through the ceiling and roof. The only requirerment was a letter from the Fire dept. for the insurance company. Check your building codes for your area.
irnsrgn
Only code here is that a blacksmith forge flue has to have no larger than 1/2 wire mesh spark arrestor on it.http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/f7/brown-co-ks-blacksmith-shop-pix-9-19-08-a-7463/
thecelticforge
I had to pour a two foot thick reinforced concrete slab under my forge. The Chimney is only going to be 16 feet tall. It is a bit of an overkill, but it kept the code people happy. That was the only stipulation besides the chimney being 4 feet higher than the roof.
