chichi
I would like to make as narrow of a slit in a 1/2 bar as possible. If I forge a chisel so that it is very thin, it cannot take the heat or force needed. I would like to make a 1/8 wide slit about 1/2 or 3/8" wide. Is this possible? Thanks, chichi
Dave Hammer
I would expect if you made your slitting chisel with S7, you would be able to do as you wish. Dip the chisel in a lube every couple hits....
BIGGUNDOCTOR
This may work better for you. Drill a series of holes where the edges are touching each other, or very close to each other to remove the bulk of the material, then punch it. You can also chisel out the slot. bigfootnampa
Do it with a slit punch. The extra metal at the tip (instead of a very thin edge) makes a big difference. I like Brian Brazeal's tip design. http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/f7/slitter-geometry-10584/index2.html#post101600
matt87
Mark Aspery makes and uses a 1/8 inch thick slitting punch in one of the demos on his website. As I recall he used some surplus spring steel, nothing fancy.
kashmire
if you cant get it as thin as you want it with a punch and its at the end of a piece. i do it cold with an angle grinder and a cut off wheel.
belargehair
Can you slit it a bit wider then just close it up up with a few hammer blows?
gaylan veater
Chichi, I went to a class of Mark Aspery a few years past, for my project I needed to punch a 1/8'' slot. I made the punch out of sucker rod that was at the shop. It was 1/8'' thick about 1'' long then tapered out to the 5/8'' sucker rod and mine was 3/4'' wide. It takes about 3 heats to puch but you only lose about 1/16'' thick material by 3/4'' the rest is pushed out. The punch has worked well just don't leave it in only about 3 or 4 hits and the water cool. It works for me and Mark Aspery. Oh it is just flat on the bottom with edges rounded just a little. chichi
Simple sucker rod and flat bottom? Seems too good to be true. I will give it a try. I did not have time tonight to view Peter Ross but I will take a look tomorrow. Thanks for all of the comments. Chichi
