Don A Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 I was recently commissioned to forge some hardware for a garden gate in one of the State Historic Areas. The home there is from the late 1800 Quote
MRobb Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 Don, they look great! Nice clean lines. Thanks for the BP. I'm sure your customer will be very happy with them. Mitch Quote
John B Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 Nice job, they look the business. Could you clarify what you mean by "Kisser Blocks", are they the swivelling ones that adapt to a taper? Quote
Don A Posted August 26, 2009 Author Posted August 26, 2009 Could you clarify what you mean by "Kisser Blocks" Yeah, I wanted the neck to stop at 5/8", so I cut a couple 5/8" blocks to fit betwen the dies of my guillotine dies. They are hidden inside the side rails. This prevents the dies from closing any tighter than 5/8". Eliminates the guess work. Don Quote
John B Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 Thanks for that explanation for kisser blocks, I term them depth regulators, sometimes I incorporate them directly into the die. Two blind holes, one at each side, and a matched pair of inserts can be dropped into them (Usually made from what we term "Silver Steel", O1 ground stock 5/8" diameter) Quote
Tom Lumpkins Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 Looks good John, thanks for sharing them with us.. Quote
Frosty Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 Nice set of hinges Don. I'm sensing another satisfied customer. Frosty Quote

bsiler Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 Nice hinges. Like the hook and eyes, never know they store bought. I was thinking yesterday about how you would go about putting threads for wood on something. I made some hinges yesterday (strap hinges) (nothing close to yours). I bought lag bolts to make the pentil ( is this the right word). I don't know that I have seen this talked about. How is it done? Billy Quote

Don A Posted August 28, 2009 Author Posted August 28, 2009 Thank you gentlemen for the kind words. It always means a lot coming from this group. John NC, The finish is simply linseed oil at a black heat, again by customer's choice. Quote
Don A Posted August 28, 2009 Author Posted August 28, 2009 Billy, Check out these threads for advice on the pintels:http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/f7/help-pintles-wrapped-welded-10469/http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/f7/strap-hinges-pintles-3414/http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/f7/pintles-hinges-3334/ Don Quote
bsiler Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 Don, Thanks for the threads. They look real good. Like Frosty said in one of the threads, making one isn't bad but making another and then several that look exactly the same is quite a challenge. I make one of something that I think looks decent and then try another and sometimes it seems impossible. I guess thats why everybody says pratice , pratice and more of it! Thank You Billy Quote
