Quang0 Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Does anyone know if it is possible to weld stainless steel to bronze? Has anyone done it that can offer advice/hints/tips/tricks? What's the best process? Are there any hazards I need to be aware of? Thanks, Paul Quote
ThomasPowers Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 (edited) Look up "brazing" or silver (hard) soldering. Also look at explosive welding. What's *best* in your case would depend on exactly what you are trying to do; which you don't seem to have given the details on, hint hint. Edited March 17, 2009 by ThomasPowers Quote
Frosty Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 They can be tig welded but I've never done it. Frosty Quote
Quang0 Posted March 17, 2009 Author Posted March 17, 2009 Thanks Thomas, When I asked what's the best process, I meant which welding process mig/tig/oxy would give the best/strongest result. The reason I am enquiring is because of the tree project, we are considering having the trunk and some branches cast in bronze so we can include the names of those who perished in the fires in the tree itself. Steve Sells Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 For strong and solid, TIG is hard to beat. Quote
ThomasPowers Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Strongest would probably be explosive welding; but it would be a real pita to do it on a tree I'd probaly silver braze it in that specific use. (they do explosive welding all the time at EMRTC here; blast pads within shaking distance of where I work and live...) Quote
Quang0 Posted March 19, 2009 Author Posted March 19, 2009 Thanks guys, the winner seems to be TIG with silicon bronze wire, so that's what I'll do (if and when) it comes down to it. Cheers, Paul Quote
