  1. my forge is next to my chicken coop and so the chicken sometimes come and peck at pieces of metal that I cut off or try and drink out of my bucket of water to cool of metal while i'm grinding. I swear some day I'm going to be carrying some red hot steel and accidentally poke one with it and make the whole area smell like kfc
  2. you could melt away all the brass with a crucible or a torch and it would leave just the steel (or other stuff with a higher melting point then brass I've done this to collect brass from a door handle
  3. My great grandpa served in world war 2 in Normandy France, he was shot in the side of the head and though to be dead he was then dragged to a pile of other dead body’s where they noticed that he was still moving so a medic scooped his “brain matter” back in his head and bandaged it shut he was flown to a hospital in Europe then flown to New England where he spent 2 years regaining his ability to walk, and talk and eventually was able to leave the hospital. In the end he could no longer move his left hand (he was left handed) and had a slight limp on one leg. He received a Purple Heart award Once I finish highschool I will go into ROTC and join the Navy to become a pilot
  4. Alright I’ll take a few classes first before jumping into Damascus
  5. Just make a master piece of a blade? share it and show off your skills
  6. The corona virus maybe bad but since quarantine I’ve learned a lot about bladesmithing And wood working
  7. I’m not looking to sell I’m just trying to learn Damascus
  8. No but I'll look at ABS classes I found one in ohio thats an abs class for 250 but it doesn't say if its closed due to the coronavirus nope they all are I think I'm just going to wait till classes in kansas city open up
  9. I'm going to drive with my mom to Indiana to attend a 2 day knife making class for 300 dollars Also this guy in St Louis is willing to give me his bench grinder for free as long as we come and pick it up and the the scroll saw is for wood working because for my moms birthday I carved/painted a picture of her horse and she showed her friends and they want one and will pay me (idk how much)
  10. Thanks right now I'm saving up for a propane forge then a scroll saw and eventually a press I make around 40 dollars a week but my dad makes me put half of it towards college plus I also hope to pay for some blade smith classes but unfortunately most of the classes around me are all stock removal knife making.
  11. No Im a highschool student and dont have much money Also I found a long bar of 15n20 on amazon for 12 dollars so I'm going to buy that
  12. I know band saw blades are used a lot is there anything else I can use
  13. I read all of those but I never found anything on making damascus with mystery steels so what I think Im going to do i make a billet from wrought iron and nickel to make a block of damascus but then save up so I can buy steels that I know will make good damascus knife
  14. Thanks I'll let you know if I still have questions
  15. Well my problem is I can't buy known steel I just have a big shop that has a table full of rusty tools that I scrap such as pry bars and files, so I would like to know what common tools or things have nickel in it but also can hold an edge.
  16. Thanks a new library opened up near my house I'll look there
  17. I have done research and haven't found straight answers I'm just trying to figure out what steels have high nickel percentage that can also hold an edge like stainless steel
  18. no unfortunately no pine trees I know the that sharp transitions are bad that's why I abandoned the small knife (maybe to make a pocket knife) and still working on the other knife and also I don't plan on damascus just yet I'm just researching
  19. Alright so I can tell the difference between high carbon steel and mild steel via the spark test, but I still don't understand how to tell what type of steel alloy you have (example: 5160, or W1, etc) Also what two steel alloys should I use to get the most visible damascus pattern? And why they make the most visible pattern (I'm told a high carbon steel mixed with a steel that has a lot of nickel in it)
  20. I made my first pair of tongs (I'm not finished yet I still have to make the pivot joint
  21. all I've forged is these three things. the knives don't have handles because I don't have epoxy or even a good drill to put pins in the handle.
  22. well its very crude my forge is a charcoal grill I made from a portable charcoal grill that i used fire brick to make a v shape then I packed the outer layer with clay, I then have steel pipe that runs down the middle with a big vertical cut running down the middle so the charcoal has air running evenly in a line (the air is pumped in through a hair dryer) and my anvil is a rail road track My equipment I have is an angle grinder. a crappy hand drill, a table mounted grinder, and various hand tools (saw, hammer, etc) Thankfully my dads co worker has a propane forge he built but recently he built a new one and he's gonna give the old one to me (except it doesn't have a burner) which is great because charcoals 20 dollars a bag and it doesn't last long so I make my own charcoal but I'm running out of usable wood. Propane also doesn't smoke or leave ash so I can move it inside my shop and not have to worry about it getting rained on or having soot always on my hands arms and face. I tried uploading photos but they weren't uploading Also I live in Missouri so I don't know if my parents would drive me
