  1. Its refractory cement Sorry I took so long to respond i was on vacation
  2. Okay I will take picture of it next time I'm out
  3. Okay thanks I will work on some fire brick doors
  4. I go through a 20 lb tank in about three days on a average of 4-6 hours a day
  5. I recently built my propane forge and found I'm going through propane really fast. I used a old propane tank as the body, I have 2 inches of k wool and 2 burners (I will provide pictures if needed). I was wondering if to save propane I should either add more insulation, invest in making a ribbon burner, or look into forced air. I will post a picture of it once I get out there (my parent don't want me forging without them home).
  6. Usually I make hidden tang knives and once a folding knife, so I decided to make a full tang to see if hidden tang or full tang is easier. I've found they're both equally as difficult in their own ways. I made it from some high carbon round stock someone gave me (I don't know the exact alloy, but I know it's high carbon) The tools I used were files, a drill press, angle grinder, sand paper, a hack saw, jig saw, and a 3 inch X 21 inch belt sander.
  7. I've been forging things like leaf necklaces and things like that but I'm running out of steel for that
  8. I'm trying to find classes to further my skills but a lot of classes are closed due to the pandemic. How should I go about furthering my skills.
  9. For me I used charcoal because I could make it for free from wood, and it would throw sparks. Eventually I made a firebrick cover this insulated heat so my steel was getting red hot faster, stopped sparks, and allowed me to use less charcoal.
  10. Alec Steele is my favorite because of the energy he puts in each piece and his personality Brian Brazeal has great videos as well
  11. my charcoal forge shot sparks and burned a hole through a plastic flower pot, so keeping hose around and building a cover for it helps also make sure to keep your charcoal away from the forge because that's how fires spread. lastly as long as your lawn isn't dry you don't have to worry to much about it to much but I wouldn't completely take your eyes off it. Basic fire safety. The dimensions are depending on how powerful your blower is (if it only heats a small area vs a huge area) what kind of blower are you using?
  12. Thanks for the suggestions I'll experiment with it tomorrow for now I need to wait for the refractory cement to dry. Also sorry Thomas I was busy and in the future I'll go and look back at old posts
  13. Usually you can contact the person and ask things like what the dimensions are or if they know if its hard face/cast iron/cast steel etc this can help you a lot I was about to buy an anvil for 250 but after I asked the dimensions I realized that the face of the anvil was 11X3 inches which to me three inches isn't wide enough so I didn't buy it.
  14. Nice another Missouri smith! I'd recommend getting a 4inX36in Belt/6in Disc sander commercial link removed from harbor freight it's great to start off with I've never had an issue but obviously if you can afford a 2X72 grinder those work better.
  15. I decided to take my metal detector around my property and I'm glad I did. first I found this huge thing of rebar that was around ten feet tall (It's bent) here's a picture of me next to it (I'm 5'10) Next I found all these Can anyone tell me what these are?
  16. Well unfortunately as I cut the holes for the burner with an angle grinder i cut it too big and i need welds to fix it but I also could mount them with rivets and fill the gaps with refractory cement. So thanks I'll have to try that if if can't get it welded up soon.
  17. I got hemorrhaged and concussed after I was skiing like an idiot on a black diamond and decided to go straight down to see how fast I go. well long story short my skis crossed and fell of causing me to fly forward hitting head first in the snow. I've had weekly migraines since. By the way I checked to see how fast i was going during the crash (I had an app that tracks your speed on each run) and it said i was going 147 mph. I dont know if its 100 percent accurate but it was pretty fast.
  18. haven't been able to forge lately because I'm still looking for someone to weld my burners holders on so I've mostly just been cleaning/organizing my shop. I've been trying to get all my wires and chords organized and just doing things I procrastinated to do because I'd rather forge.
  19. bought brass pins and some calipers although they aren't sharpened plus a push broom and a angle grinder flap disc
