  1. would the fuel rail off of a car work? or even off of a diesel. i know the cummins diesel in particular (only used the example because i know it best, i am in no way advertising) uses reduculously high pressures in it's fuel pump (in diesel's this is on the side of the engine the pump that is in the tank is called a lift pump) maybe use the fuel rail and fuel pump off of a small diesel engine to spray the fuel (gass or oil) for the forge. maybe drill a tiny hole in each injector so that they continuously spray? would a carbourator with a turbocharger (or it's electronically powered equivelent) on top of it to force air through and then just use the normal fuel ports in the carb to deliver the fuel?
  2. i saw an add for the oxy/gasoline torches the other day and it got me to thinking. can you make a gasoline forge? maybe pressurize an old propane tank with fitting from an air compressor and the just have a pour in tube with a cap so that it can be filled and then closed and pressurized. it seems to me that gas is cheaper than propane (atleast where i live) would this even be possible? would it need smaller nozzles to atomize the fuel properly? would it even get the steel up to proper heat? if anyone has any experience or even some harebrained guesses they'rd be much apreciated.
  3. no when it's 115 out u should have a fully enclosed and a/c'd shop
  4. why not put a cummins in it? either 4bt or 6bt, the ve pump is near indestructable and get's great mileage. the p-pump is just as good but more power and less mileage
  5. why would borax mess up a weld?
  6. as interesting as it is and even with how much will be learnt, that's just painfull to watch
  7. thanks for the support, like i said i don't need to make these for a long time yet, but i wanted the info now to tell her if i though i could or not. ill probably be making these sometime next year as i will be going to bootcamp within this year (hopefully) so the info is much apreciated.
  8. if i just melted the pennies down would the zinc mix with the copper?
  9. im gonna have to get that program, and frosty it's a bit of a joke from a conversation about forge welding on the forum.
  10. oh wow that's awsome, what program did u use to make that?
  11. they're both catholic so i was thinking a cross.
  12. the simplest 1 possible to make, she wants over 200, but i've got months and months before the wedding, i just need to be able to tell her if i can do it or not
  13. any way to forge them? i have no clue how to cast things, or any idea where to get pewter
  14. how do u make skeleton keys? my best friend's girl is trying to do a little wedding planning while he's on afgahnastan and she wants them to put on people's seats with nametags on them, like as take home gifts and as reception things. what is a simple efficient way to make them yet not have them look horrible? cause she wants ALOT. any help would be much appreciated.
  15. where is a good place to get sander belts? i need the course grit ones but at my local homedepot (the only place in the area that even sells 1x30 belts they only sell them in 3 packs with a coarse, medium, and fine grit. i take forever to where out the medium and fine grit but i wear out the heavies in no time.
  16. at size 13 workboots are a bit hard to find, but i really like wolverines.Honestly i wear flip flops while forging. every1 makes fun of me until they drop something hot down their boot. with the flipflops i can just flip'em off or just shove my whole foot in my quench tank (5gallon bucket)
  17. will parkerizing mess with the temper of a knife?
  18. fold down one of the sides and forge the other, then fold that 1 down and do the other
  19. mix up a flux from 2/3 boric acid and 1/3 steel powder/ shavings (like out of a brake grinding machine or a sandblaster). even a half retarded sea sponge could weld with this stuff, it practically wants to weld it'self lols.
  20. sorry to sound like an idiot but would a dimmer switch (like the 1 found controlling alot of dining room light fixtures) work?
  21. maybe part of the american fascination with anvils isn't just that we don't have any castles or historical things like that, or even that anvils are hard to find and expensive as all get out here. maybe it's a bit of mentality, any europeans i have met (not many ill admit) put their focus on the finished product, while americans (atleast where i am ) focus more on the journey there. so where a european might be awstruck by a sword, the americans i know are more likely to wonder about the tools and techniques that made it. just my 2cents :D
  22. of my quite limited experience i would give this advice: learn the grinding portion first and learn it well, that hardest part of a knife is the finishing, forging the knife isn't all that hard, it's just applying basic skill in an advanced way
  23. is the tang too thick for leather stack? and how do you attach the buttcap, threaded or peened?
