  1. while old steel cable my seem like a good option to use for raw, low carbon, material... DON'T... when i heated it to between white and yellow and then hit it with a hammer, the thing EXPLODED!... took my 4ever to pick the little fibrous pieces out of my hand... and the hot pieces started lots 'o' little fires that took quite a quick step to put out:(
  2. anything and everything i can wrap my head around:D... and the 8ibs hammer was just an example... while i do have it i don't plan on using it for everyday smithing... i was just trying to state that im really not worried about the weight of my 4ibs hammer... im just trying to get advice on the shape of hammer i should be using (seeing as i am a complete beginner) and/ or if there is anything i should do to the hammer i posted pics of to make it any better:D
  3. so i got the pics of my workspace and anvil... the workspace is essentially a shack.... and the anvil is a 3/4in. I-beam stood on end with 2 pieces of 1in. plate steel forge welded together with an O/A torch and a hammer and them welded on top of the I-beam
  4. i do have a 3ibs hammer but it has an incredibly short handle... the reason i got the 4 pounder is because the 3ibs hammer felt WAY to light... i felt like i was smacking the steel with a stick
  5. the handle isn't varnished... thanks for the concern though... im 16 so this is my light hammer, my other is 8ibs, now that things a beast , but what do you mean by smooth down the sides?
  6. ok so i just bought my first hammer... it's light enough for me that i don't get overly tired swinging it for long periods of time and i can hit pretty accurately with it... but i need your thoughts on the hammer itself... will it serve my purposes as a beginner? don't be afraid to speak your minds, i still have the receipt. :)
  7. just finished my workspace and anvil... will post pics as soon as i figure out how
  8. ok so i have the perfect 3 pound hammer but it needs a new handle... my grandfather had an old sledge but the only way he got the handle on was by wittling it down to fit in the hole... any tricks to putting the stick in the hole?
  9. by general advice, i meant old- timer advice lol maybe i should have been more specific. but i had meant just like advice from experience... just odds and end that you don't normally hear about
  10. i know i have made a few postings asking questions, so i would jsut liek to make one in which the more experienced people out there can just give advice on any blacksmithing- related topic. so thankyou, just trying to get as much info as i can
  11. wells agian guys thanks for the advice... it's just a matter of finding the right thing now. a family friend runs a land deveolopment company down here and works on his own equipment, so maybe something from a loader...
  12. thanks for the feedback guys... am i complete and total beginner at this, so ANY advice is helpfull
  13. anything i should do to dress it up? i tend to just make fire pokers and hinges (usually cold because i just got my forge finished) but i do want to eventually try a sword or 2 now that i have my forge. i tried to make one cold out of a piece of 3/4in trailer steel once, it looked horrible and after i was done i could bend it around itself into a loop :P
  14. i have a piece of 3/4in I-beam i've been using... but as i am a little younger than most i tend to get a little over- eager with the hammering and bend the beam on the sides and such... i was just looking for an anvil that can stand up to a good pounding. I wonder if welding another 1/2 to 1in plate on top would help or just make it so un-balanced it would try to fall over
  15. im trying to get the cheapest anvil i can get, something that is still fairly workable though... i've heard alot of bad buzz about the harbor freight 55 ibs and the 100 ibs anvils. anybody know anything about them or ways to make them better if they truly suck as much as i've heard. Because they just seem like too good of a deal to pass up
  16. im in seminole county, and thanks for all the responses guys,... it's a big help. although i won't be buying the charcoal when i can so redily and easily make it myself. seeing as i live in the middle of the woods. any advice on anything else would be much apreciated. also wonder if my makeshift anvil from 1/4in I- beam with 1/2in plate welded on top is workable
  17. ok people, im just starting out and am trying to get as much of my building of my forge and such done during this drought. I need to know if there is a place in florida where i can get coal or coke, and if so where is it? and i wonder if charcoal is burn hot enough to get steel up to a good yellow/ white heat. Also any advice is welcome.
