  1. a 50/50 mix of mineral spirets and linseed oil applied at about 200-300 degrees works amazingly well, foodsafe too if you give it about a month b4 letting it touch any food
  2. hey frosty, i resemble that remark lol... there's no problem with wanting to make a sword wen you're just starting out... that's the point... you're just starting out and don't know any better... it is a good way to tell those who are serious though... most people quit when they find out it's gonna take them years to be able to make a sword... not many of us stick around:p
  3. he means that when you grind the blade... leave it sligtly too big... that way when you polish the blade it won't end up smaller than you want
  4. is there any way to attach good steel to an ASO for a pounding face?... i have been thingking about buying one of those 55# anvils from harbor freight for the horn and hardie hole. just wondering if i could attach a piece of forklift tong i have to it for a removable striking face.

    4140

wells i guess i need to learn what the #'s mean... so i assume that the 40 means there is steel, and other stuff in there?

does 1095 have a good nickle content for good contrast?

what would be a good steel to weld to 4140 for a damascus billet?
  8. ok sorry but this is gonna take an explanation before i can get to my question. since case hardening is essentially getting steel hot and putting it in carbon causing the steel to "soak up" the carbon... when we put steel into a fire aren't we doing the same thing when we heat steel in a coal or charcoal fire? so wouldn't that make any steel you put in the forge actually a higher carbon content?
  9. I was told it cast by a guy... not a company... but idk... seems to nice for just a backyard casting
  10. it's a brand new anvil form some guy in england... all cast steel
  11. i saw this at a scrapyard near where i live... just over 80ibs and near $400
  12. pretty cook material choice and pretty cool knife:D
  13. could someonewith lots of experience working coal give corn a try? i gave it a go coming from the charcoal end of things... would just like an oppinion on how it compares to coal.
  14. lol yeah i have been pretty busy.... what can i say... this stuff is just plain cool lol. a few of the things im dissapointed with on the rose are that the top petals are too long, the petals are aranged badly, and i messed up the peen on the inside (it bent instead) that being said,i do like the way the copper worked for petals... i hope steel will work that well when i get around to trying :p
  15. lol it's not baiting... they just happen to like your fuel lol... and trust me... come deer season im gonna have alot of venisen... there's about 6, of course... they are tiny florida deer... so maybe not alot lol
  16. i switched to corn the other day and have fired up the forge only a few times since, with my forges design (horrrible) alot of my fuel falls on the ground, and frankly im too lazy to pick it up. because of the corn on the ground (im guesing) i had deer in my yard thismorning for the first time in over 10 years (and strangely they were all over by the forge with their heads down):p
  17. so tis is the first rose a have made... so plz don't be too critical lol:p
  18. lol ok so this thread is going way better than i thought it would... really striking up usefull debate. so let me throw a little wrench in the works. since the craftsmen all seem to know what it means to be hand made or wrought, how do you explain the difference to a customer? where do you explain to a client that the line between and made and not goes?
  19. why don't you give it a try and keep us informed... if they sell it as fuel it'll probably be cheeper for you than for us if that's the case. heck there's only one way i could get that many chery pits and something tells me my stomach wouldn't thank me lol :p
  20. it's no joke, and i am not pulling your leg. you are not using anything but the kernals, just go to a feed store and buy a 50ibs of whole kernal corn, they'll know what you"re talking about. and to start it i just started a very small carcoal fire in the forge, it burns easily enough that you could just light it with a little torch, but my way was quicker :p
  21. ok, so that looks really cool... i would deffinently have to shrink down everything, but that is deffinently a good way tp do it.
  22. i was wanting to make the leaves out of some 1/4in copper wire i have... and the stem/ringloop out of steel so it'll last... actually i was thinking about using a stainless bolt for the stem, though this'd give it a nice contrast and make it less maintenince for her:D
