  1. well the teeth on top have no reason other than to make it look nasty (this knife is a present for my 18 year old nephew, he likes that kind of stuff) the bend was just the natural bend from hammering the profile of the cutting edge without straightening the knife. this knife is my 6 or 7 th i made at the forge but the first one i finished. my first couple didnt look like what i thought they would look like then i had a huge learning curve thanks to reading posts on this site.thanks for the comments. im so addicted to this........
  2. 18 inch oal. 12 inch blade oak handle leafspring hand forged, filed and sanded to 400grit motor oil quench, tempered, spine drawn. unfortunately i lost patience with this knife and just wanted to finish it so the blade is still a little potched here and there. sorry for the bad pic as my camera is on vacation so i used my video cam..... cant w8 to start the next one.
  3. thanks for the advice DON A i epoxied the handle slabs tonight and epoxy went everywhere so tomorrow i guess ill scrape off the epoxy and finish the rest. i do tend to over think things, just get r dun.
  4. do you think it would help to wet the wood before peening (of course into a champered hole , and drilled pins'at each end in the center)?
  5. 18 inch overall 12 inch blade leaf spring from a toyota minivan handle is oak pins are mild steel quenched in motor oil @ nonmagnetic, file tested kitchen oven tempered (im thinking of drawing the back of the blade w/ edge in 1/2 inch water) sanded to 220 grit so far (i know its not perfect, lots of dings n dents but all work is done by files and hand sanded and im still learning patience in sandin, my mind is already thinking of new blade designs and i just wanna finish this knife. i had milled a gaurd of mild steel but i filed it to wide and didnt feel like spending the time on another so i ended up with a simple wood handle. the handle is only shaped it still needs a good rough sanding , progression, and then a nice 400 grit finish, the blade will end up at 400 grit too. things i learned: plan simple knives for now, be carful when filing. scratches are a pain, dont be scared to quench the oil wont catch fire too much, patience is a virtue i have to work on. question... do i peen the pins when the epoxy is still wet or wait till it dries, i would think that its done when its dry but maybe ill loosen them when i hammer them????? ps i still will draw back of blade finish handle finish sanding near bolster epoxy handles on peen pins finish sand 400 grit.
  6. thanks for sayin what i knew to be true ,i just thought id ask in case i was assuming wrong, im just cheap so i was using donated oil , i will spring for canola.
  7. hi just a quick question, i have a large leaf spring knife to quench so i would like to add to my quench oil (it has seen only two small knives) do i have to add the same type of oil ie, 10 w 40 or can i mix in ie, 5 w 30 or even canola oil ??? i have some of each.please help as im now stuck.thank you
  8. hey drako11 those knives look like my rr spike knives, but then again ive only used a forge 5 times ......
  9. hey jimmy seale go and see this guy, i would love to meet him, he must be very funny....
  10. sweet chisel but too nice to actually use................
  11. im new and addicted too. nice set up ,i think ill look for a drop of steel like that rather than my rr rail anvil, nice knives, i started by refurbishing some old knives then i had to progress to shaping the steel too....
  12. nice. ive been practising on rr spikes too, does it hold a nice edge? i wasnt goona finish mine but id like to if they hold a good edge.
  13. yes you are right i dont need one as i could learn to forge shape the steel to the thickness and shape i need , i was just wondering about cheating by welding pieces together to achieve thickness and desired shape then grinding out the weld. also i though that maybe thats a good way to attatch stuff because heat wouldnt interfear with the bond. i assume i could only weld steel (not brass or other) but coulndt i braze with a welder ??
  14. i know nothing of welding but wish to be able to weld some gaurds, bolsters, and pommels , etc.... what is the best direction to go in (mig, tig, arc) i dont really even know what the difference is but im looking for the safest, simplist, and cheapist(most important) sorry dont know where to ask this here or welding but figure its strictly for hobby bladesmithing (although id like to be able to weld up a forge stang or something simple like that..) thanks for anyhelp.
  15. cool looking knife even better when you think about what its made from...
  16. DISCLAIMER .. i was just informed of the illegality of taking rail spikes even if left behind long after it was dismanteled... so the forementioned story was just a dream.
  17. after browsing this post i went on walk with my son down a old track line that is semi-dismanteled. i scored large. heaps of spikes for practice, a couple of plates and rail anchors too. there is lots more scattered all around but wow that stuff is heavy and three year olds cant carry much..............
  18. i find the bigger the knife the easier to work, that knife shows skill and good eyesight, it must be no bigger than my baby finger. do all nails hold an edge or just because its a concrete nail it must be a tougher, harder steel , higher carbon content ??????
  19. that site has wicked knives, i definetly marked it to browse through from time to time. oh yeah my jaw still hurts from hitting the ground when i saw the catagory for knives over $4000. i really gotta get back to the forge and practice.
  20. i like the colour of maple next to steel but not mixed with brass.
  21. looks like a nice mean knife. saw teeth are always cool especially real saw teeth. what kind of steel is hacksaw steel, and where does one get a hacksaw blade so thick ,i only know of the regular about 5/8 wide.??
  22. sweet knives, thanx for info on the handle assembly, nice to have more options .
  23. hey steve that knife is OUTTA THIS WORLD ... haha cant believe nobody said it yet. sweet knife.
  24. i saw them on the net and used thier forge design instead of the 'brake drum forge' cause i wanted to be able to treat large blades and i live in suburbia so i went charcoal cause its cleaner than coal and safer than gas (for me) also liked the knife he made in the video ...
