  1. What kinda mileage does it get? lol well I’ve seen diesel an waste oil forges but I’ve never heard of a gasoline rig, sounds kinda spooky to me, Were you exchanging propane tanks or having them refilled? I don’t forge with propane but I do run bottle top heaters in the winter, i know in my area I can take a grill size bottle an get it refilled for $10-$12 bucks vs $20-$30 at an exchange, I only go there when I need to offload an old bottle I bought at a junk sale and swap it for something new lol
  2. Looks awesome! I can’t wait to see it fired up!
  3. Mr Volcano, howdy! how y’all been doin? Thank you for the safety alert! Keepin smiths smithin safely is always priority uno! sorry to change the subject but I was curious if y’all are planning on setting up at quad state this year? it’s coming up in a couple months and that would be a great venue to share your safety information an answer questions about y’all’s forges with lots of people in person!
  4. If I go I’d like to find a ridiculously large mandrel! Not because I need one just because it would look better in my smithy than on someone’s trailer lol not to mention it would be the one thing the shop cats couldn’t sleep on or in! id also like to find a bigger swage block in decent shape, ive got a 75 pounder I found but it’s pretty beat up, and one of the square holes doesn’t go all the way through, it looks like when it was cast something went wrong an it accidentally filled up half of that hole,
  5. Everyone knows Hippopotamus easier to forge then ducks!
  6. Howdy from eastern Oklahoma an welcome to the forum! we have several scrap artists here you’ll fit right in!
  7. Yes it’s just a box of sand, you can make em outta wood or steel, An if you don’t wanna build one you could always repurpose a 20 gallon steel drum, they are already pretty close to the correct hight just fill one with sand an your done, easy peasy! both of my sand stands were a little more involved they are made from some heavy square steel pipe I cut off an just welded a plate on one end, the sand packs down rock solid after it settles, and it deadens the ring of an anvil almost nonexistent, so if your worried about your ears they are the most quiet stands, I went down the the local concrete mixing operation and told the Forman I wanted to buy some sand and he just told me to go shovel out what I needed, no more then I wanted he wasn’t gonna fool with the paper work,
  8. Blacksmith depot only Carries the 1/4 an 3/16 in packs of 100 In various lengths so that wouldn’t help ya, Have you priced the round stock at the local steel yard to see if it might be cheaper to just make your own? I’m not for sure what length of rivets your needing but I’d think you could get more then 30 rivets out of a 36” stick of each size, then you’d have some leftovers for next time!
  9. Lol they’re only cute when they wanna be! Lol I’ve got two anvil sand stands but the trick is to make sure the footprint of the anvil takes up enough space that they can’t fit in the sand! Yeah these goofy cats where harassing a tree frog in the kettle just a couple days ago till I shooed them off so it could get away lol, Shainarue, if you haven’t already you might wanna look into a sand stand, as they are adjustable for different heights, so you can fine tune what works for you, then in the future if you decide to get a different anvil an it’s taller you can use the same stand an just remove sand to make it the right hight for you!
  10. i don’t go to the big box stores they are usually a waste of time an fuel, the little mom an pop hardware stores I have better success an customer service, a lot of people don’t re handle axes an shovels anymore so it’s not super common, I’ve found that some box store employees don’t even know what they have in stock, and their go to answer is “sorry we don’t carry that” but when I go digging around I find what I’m looking for lol, i usually see the bigger steel rivets in a small box on a shelf in the fastener hardware aisle, I look for the wedges for hammers an axes and usually somewhere close by that box will be another box with a selection of rivets for the shovels an such, one other option ive used at the local hardware store is having them special order stuff for me, even if they don’t carry it in stock regularly themselves they can get a lot of stuff that’s hard to find, so if your local hardware store don’t have it you might see if they will order you a whole selection box of rivets, I did that a few years back an had them get me a box of wedges for fixing up old tools, the big hardware supply companies usually sell to individuals so you gotta go through a dealer, but there’s also plenty of different blacksmith suppliers that carry them too if you wanna just order online,
  11. Lol your welcome Jerry! i was just trying to be helpful
  12. I gotta keep all my smithy junk over by my repair shop, im allowed to have as many forges as I want as long as they don’t spill over into the yard lol
  13. I saw something awhile back where someone was using old bolts to make rivets, i think blacksmith depot has some in bulk though also if ya go to the local hardware store or farm supply store ect.. look around the wedge selection for tool handles, because you can get steel rivets in different lengths for re handling tools with round socket handles like shovels, pitchforks and the like, you can also get paste wax an blo while your there!
  14. Jerry, Sheesh don’t you know anything? Cats much purrrfer anvils, firepots an forges
  15. That’s a bummer John, your gonna let everyone else have all the fun?
  16. That’s where a sand stand comes in handy!
  17. My forges set outside in the weather an a little wash’s off during really bad storms but for the most part once it’s cooked hard it holds up pretty good
  18. Shaniarue, i dunno if y’all ever get down to northeast Oklahoma or not but if y’all do lemme know what size stump you need for your anvil, I run through tons upon tons of oak an hickory firewood every year so I can set aside a log for ya if you want, I also got plenty of material to build steel stands settin around, but it’d probably be faster to just hook up with a local firewood cutter in your area an tell ‘em what your wanting, with fall around the corner it won’t be long before they’ll be back out in the woods again,
  19. Did ya get a senior discount? Do I need to get you a golf cart or a four wheeler to get ya around up there?
  20. You should be okay with a galvanized bucket for that, galvanized metal is only dangerous if you were to weld on it or put it in the forge, just don’t make the mistake countless others have an use a plastic bucket! It works great until it don’t! Lol
  21. I line my forges with free red dirt clay off the side of the road and it seems to work good an it’s pretty durable!
  22. You Be nice! or I’ll fire up those giant fans I got for Thomas and blow some of this 100 degree weather up to Alaska!
