Love the shape on that. Thanks for the run through. Great work!

Everyone knows pies are round. If they are square, they are called cakes.
cobbler in a square casserole dish could be the root of pie.

What do you use, Daswulf?
I use coal. couldnt say what kind it is but i have a source...... maybe i'll ask him next time lol. only been there once with the guy that showed it to me. it works well tho, cokes well and heats up well. have a nice pile of it outside the garage. may get more soon as a friend is bringing me an old truck bed so i plan to use that to store it. right now it's under a tarp on roofing tin. I have some extra hammers, cross peins and ball peins so all ya gotta do is come check em out. maybe this weekend if all is good.

Thanks guys, I'm definitely going to do that. I could certainly use the guidance and example. I'll be doing some more research today on what I need for the forge so I can really get started. Outside of that, I just need to work on getting the tools together and I'll be set. I'll probably have questions, but I expect the kind folks on here will all be happy to answer them also.
What tools do you need? being not far can put you in a good position for that too as for help from us. knowing what ya need can help us help you get em.

Nice work! get a hood and chimney on that forge and start using it
-
the original question was what is the square root of pie.

Oops....

Nice, you may want to sink the fire pot more in the table. i'm sure your getting it figured out. and sides on the table help keep the coal in but again...
Nice Jeep i have about 7 cj5's laying around mostly parts only, one 66 i'm still rewiring, and one off road only farm fun jeep with a blown transmission. Oh the projects...

Hey Josh, I'm about 45 minutes south of Pittsburgh. not a bad ride really.

Thank you Frosty, I will give this a try some day when I want to build a gas forge. Looks really easy to follow. Nice work. And thanks Spanky for the editing.

That's a possibility Thomas. A lot of times a name will just come to me pretty quickly. This one I can't lock down. Making the piece came pretty easy as to what it was looking like. How can a name or title be so elusive? Can't say I planned any symbolism into this but after thinking about it it could be looked at as such. Tho that I'd leave up to whoever would buy it. To me it's art, like a sculpture. We can all find our own meaning in the things we see. So I want to keep it simple.

Like the design and execution! As a one off "art piece" in New Orleans gallery I'd say your end after consignment would be $150 as a New Artist. Out right sale $275.
Needs an "artsie" title
Thanks Charlotte, I'll have to ponder on an "artsie" title/ name for it.

also based on what you see, what would you charge for this in 3 evenings worth of work? could be less after the design is now done but it's more a one off. thats out of curiosity more.

John B, I'll give it a shot as i plan to make more of these and would like em to turn out well. forthcoming.
sorry DSW....

I still go to auctions, just don't get caught up in the bidding frenzy. just stick to good deals. if it's a no go it's a no go. i've learned auctioneers to stay away from and ones that are trustworthy.

Your not too far from me really. Probably 25 minutes or so. I work in Washington pa. And it's about a 20 minute ride or so for me.
I'll keep you in the loop and if you can make it then great.

anytime you feel like it, I'm down to burn some coal. Just tell me when. I have a fair bit of free time while I'm sparsely employed so don't hesitate! Lol.
definitely, I'll let ya know.

Welcome Joe. Where about in Pittsburgh? You should take Ivan up on that as he knows his stuff and you can learn a lot more first hand then you will on your own. I learned a lot from Ivan when he was here and thinking I should bribe him to come hang out another weekend day. I'm just a bit south of Pittsburgh. I'm still young in this art but I've been learning a lot with help here and doing it. Get that forge table built and get at it.
Don't forget we all love pictures here.

Glen, you of course mean: "weld the open end of the lug wrench to the plate leaving the swell pointing up to use as a flare tool." ?
(I've had a few students that needed rather explicit instructions for things I thought was self evident...)
I understood what he meant but ya never know.

Hey everyone, I'm Josh and I'm from Pittsburgh, PA. Chemical Engineer by education, Controls/Mechanical/Electrical Engineer by career. Just starting out in putting together my own little set up and I happened upon a nice find today - a neighbor overheard my talking about looking for an Anvil and told me that I could have her old one for free. She bought herself a much smaller one, so she didn't need this one and it was just sitting. Turns out it's a Peter Wright. She says it's about 100lbs but I'll have to get it on the scale to know for sure. Says "1 1 3" on the side along the Peter Wright Patent symbol. Any questions about it? I'm happy to take more pictures.
There does seem to be some minor damage to it, but honestly I'm just starting out and I'm sure it's nowhere near as bad as I think it is - since I'm only just starting anyways.
Here are some pictures!
I'll be looking into the safest way to clean her up tonight, as she's been outside for what seems like a while.
Edit#1: I'm told by Dale Russell that "1 1 3" = 143 lb ... the first 1 = 112 lbs , second 1 = 28 lbs , 3 = 3 lbs. I appreciate the information, Dale!
Looking forward to doing exactly what Dale suggested next, which was to "hit it with wire brush to get rid of some of the surface rust & get pounding hot iron on it."
Nice score for free! where about in Pittsburgh are ya?

What a nice bday gift. Better get hammering.
-
If all else fails, ask Mr. Lincoln, Mr. Hobart, or Mr. Miller for their blessing then put the metal into the fire and dress it up to hide the weld.
I like your thinking. I still try forge welding on oddball pieces and mangle it every time. Think I'll just try this for now myself till I get it down with normal pieces.

We are going to start working as a team on projects, I just need to get better at somethings first!
You both are at a great start. I realized I forgot to say that looks like a beautifully drifted eye on that hammer Nick.

yup, same concept as where this would help. I actually got a bag of leather scraps at Michaels craft store ( after picking through the bags to find one with usable sizes) and also leather cord for lacing it. Inexpensive really. Get saving those hammers and I hope it helps you out.
