  1. yes, they are arc welded. unfortunately it had to have a surface as flat as possible, if not, I would use a collar to keep the "petals" together, or other nicer solution, but the functionality first

just an idea but could it be welded then ground on the top then collared for a flush fit on the top? Nice work!

  2. well get on it!! I have made several since my first attempt at a knife about a month ago. It's addictive, now I just need to find about 100' of cable

haha, nice and I bet it is. I'm still working on some tools. guess it wouldn't hurt to cut a piece of leaf spring and give it a shot. I'll have to re read on proper quench and heat treating. I glance at the subject here and there and numbers get jumbled in my brain so it would be best if I study up on that subject and actually apply it.

Ive made many KSO's. Just never anything proper before.  Good luck getting some cable. Can't wait to see the next ones you make.

  3. Hey nice first for welded cable. Neat shape to it. I like it. Only thing on the shape that would be more pleasing to my untrained non knife making eye would be for the blade to follow to the handle more and stop there on the edge side instead of it tapering to the handle. But I can't critique it cause I haven't tried yet. :) good start in it.

  4. Good man iwf ;) welcome from across the state.

J.w.s, seems like I supply the beer, coal, steel, and everything else most always. Need to work on that....  Unless they are bringing some know how to teach me something. Then my forge and fridge are open :D

  5. Welcome Spaz, you met two good guys there at that auction. Pete (Crazy Ivan) on here is very knowledgable. And yeah, putting your location in your profile can help. If you poke around on here there's a lot of good information on here to answer a lot of your questions and if you still need help from there the good people here are glad to help. Always helps answering questions that are specific rather then broad as you can get a lot of answers even from a specific question.

Did you mean start off as far as projects for beginners? A search would bring up a lot of em.

  6. Yeah that broken one was good practice for me in striking, and I definitely learned a lesson. we made a nice pair now that will be used many years down the road.  I always liked those old hand made tools that outlasted their maker and then I was able to put them to use. I'd think we would all like to see our work passed down for use but better yet the knowledge.

  7. Many thanks to Crazy Ivan, I've been learning a lot. It is a slippery slope in tool making that started with making a Brazeal style hot cut without proper tongs to hold the axle shaft stock. So last week we started on tongs and had a "learning experience" with unknown stock after a bit of hard work.  <_<

last night we got it and made a nice set of tongs for the axle shaft stock. No more lost sleep haha.  Then we made a temporary punch from part of a pick mattock to make a good handled hammer eye punch out of the axle shaft.  Now I have tools to make tools, and know how to make the tools to make tools.

It's an addicting process and learning from Crazy Ivan has been extremely helpful. Opens up endless possibilities in tool making. I'll have to get pictures of the hot cut and the temporary punch but here's the results from last night.  And some thinks would be easier with a power hammer but we hammered it out pretty well.

  8. To much of my dad in me, i would fix the ear, especialy if I have a welder on the hook (well acualy I would weld it up my self, lol

I agree Charles, aside from the fact that I think it would be a sight to see my dad even screw in a light bulb. He never missed his screw drivers when we were little guys digging in the dirt with em. Wish I could have learned more from my grandfathers.

  9. Also take it apart and clean the cheeks of the pivot area and oil/grease them so it will open easier.  And yes I would have been happy to buy that at that price and I'm considered somewhat cheap

Cheap? i'd have thought youd have 10 of everything by now so it wouldnt be worth it. you saying that gives me hope. :) your not cheap, just experienced.

  10. ah ok. no problem. just didnt want you doubting yourself.

only person you really have to prove anything to is yourself :)

well and the court. heres hoping you dont have to do that one ...

  11. are you saying it isnt worth $25?

Value is relative to the person/place. if it's worth it to you then it is. i would pay that without blinking an eye, fix it up and use it no problem. they do pop up around me from time to time but usually go for a little more/same in incomplete shape, or alot more in better shape. If the screw is good, and the jaws look pretty good to me, fix it up and use it. it'll last you many years. whats that worth?

  12. No problem keep us up on the fix. It could either help you or others. These posts are looked at by alot of people after the initial start of em. so pictures always help too.

  13. Spring didn't look broken, looks like the bolt plate is broken and that can be fixed.

Do yourself a favor and unwind the handle and check the threads on the screw. How do they look?

Jaws look pretty good in my opinion.
