Das, your marshmallow toaster looks fine, but I have found them impractical ... they melt the marshmallow and it falls in the fire. A stick is not as handsome but seems to preserve the delicacy better.

I Love the Meerkat idea Ausfire.

the fork is invaluable for multiple uses. i havnt lost a marshmallow yet ;) but hotdogs, sausage, bacon, toast, anything you can poke on it, or hold with it. sticks are too easy. lol kinda like, i had long tines on this guy. buddy said" fix em on this piece of 1" round." one side breaks off... i correct the other side, go again, side breaks off again......... correct again and said ok i'm happy with imperfect :) lets leave it alone. any way if a stick works, it works. why perfect it or change the way something just "works" just wanted to make this is all.   and if Your happy with something, just go with it.

Oh!, has anyone ever used a couple rr spikes into a lucky horseshoe? it was an idea i had tonight..

  2. Ok here is the mental start to a project. Not blacksmith related other then blacksmiths may have made some of these bits. But insight into how an insane artists mind starts. We see something and the mind starts seeing things and it morphs from there. Well I can only talk for myself. But I see a rough cut piece of wood with old braces and bits fanning out to the smaller and older ones.

Let me know what you think. I want to do this one without ruining any of these yet locking them in place. I love antiques like this and couldn't bear to ruin them. Best I want to go is to epoxy them into place.

I plan to make this so it will happen. ;)

  3. If your Building a shop it wouldn't hurt to look at others shop designs. One thing to look into is where you will put your forge and How you will vent it. There are a lot of discussions here on side draft versus hood vents. Different people have done different styles of venting with success and failure so that is something to look into. I vent straight out of the roof so I could swap out my forge if I needed to as it is separate from the vent. Or if I wanted to switch to a side draft I could make it and plum it in.

Do some research, there are a lot of good options out there that work fine and a lot that arnt but doing a little reading you can usually tell what's what. After that it's personal preference. You can get elaborate or keep it simple. Mine is fairly simple and works great for me but as Frosty said once you get the experience you'll learn what works for you. I agree with Frosty . Keep it simple at first, you won't lose your welding skills to make something more elaborate later if you want.

Sorry I'm still new to using anthracite I mostly use charcoaled wood and propane but that coal burns extremely hot and I torched the end of 2 knives completly off guess I'm going to have to get used to the heating times from forge to anvil lol

Coal can burn the tips off your knives too ;) try cutting the air down a bit, pay more attention to your steel in the fire. Doesn't take long when the work piece gets thinner. Also placement of your piece in the fire. Keep the tip out of the sweet spot.

I tried the nut coal on its own last night. Took a lil bit to get it going good but once it was going it worked well.

looks like a chain making set. if the one long one has a dip at the end.

No dip in the end of the long one.

Quarry Dog, you're not being silly. That's a good idea, tho for me it would still need clamped in the vise since the hardy hole on my anvil isnt big enough for these. I also have a smaller rr track anvil that comes in handy for that as well with a smaller horn as well.

Well I've been told they're softer then other anvils ect, rebound of my haybudden is about 80-85% and the Czech is about 50-60%. I just don't want to be buying something that's a step up from an aso been reading mixed reviews going to just have to get it and give it a try I suppose, and I would das but then I'd be out of another anvil :P I want a euro style one

Just saying I'd love to make a spot in my shop for an anvil like that at that price. Good find, And good luck with it.
