  1. Procrastination is my motivation. If I dive in and do all of my projects I would then have nothing to look forward to. I like to have A LOT on my to do list, gives me hope for the future!
  2. I bought my wife a 1971 Honda CT 90 for a camp bike and I bought myself a Stihl 250 chainsaw.
  3. I just drove them in, which may have been a mistake. I only got a bit of splitting on the outermost spike. It's just a Doug fir chunk I had laying around, I'd rather find a good oak piece to use.
  4. I was pleasantly surprised with how well railroad spikes worked. It's very quiet now and stable.
  5. I'd best get to studying brazing techniques! I did a little back in the mid 70's but I don't think that'll help me much now.
  6. Here's a shot of the broken gear.
  7. I picked up this old forge awhile back. I just got after cleaning it all up and had a welder friend of mine try to repair a broken tooth on the main drive gear. After I got it all back together I was trying to adjust the mechanism to run smoothly but the gear jammed and broke the repaired tooth. I'm a bit disappointed but the forge must go on! I removed the blower and gear drive mechanism, down to the hardware store for some fittings and swipe the wife hair dryer! It seems to be a bit high on the low setting, it went through my coal pretty fast. I have another idea to attach my leaf blower that will turn down to almost nothing.
  8. Thanks for all the replies guys! I really appreciate the input.
  9. Normal forging will be done on my anvil. I do see your point about the unsupported center, I may have to add a leg in the center on both sides if I have issues.
  10. The goal is a flat surface, there seems to be no give in the setup. The track is new and unused so there would be no work hardening. I'm hoping that I'll be able to use it for straitening and flat surface projects. I'm still new to all of this so I may be way off.
  11. I really like the way this turned out. 3 ft of RR track and some oak boards from a salvaged pallet.
  12. Next weekend I'll be at Fort Umpqua Days in Elkton Or. There has been a demo there for as many years as I've been going. There was also a demo going on at the Antique Powerland museum and annual Steam up in Brooks Or. It's really nice when the blacksmith interacts with the viewers, some just do their thing but don't talk much.
  13. They make cool sounding bells!
  14. I came up with this from scraps laying around my shop. These other racks are giving me some great ideas!
  15. Yup, gotta luv'em! Here are my 1$ bin scores

  17. I just saw these guys the other day, Love it!
  18. There were several running in that building, very cool stuff! I took a bunch of pics and movie clips of things going on around there. There is literally something for everyone there! I tried to upload a movie clip but it didn't like that type of file.
  19. I went to the Antique Powerland Great Oregon Steamup today, way too much to see in a day! They also had a really cool flea market going on, here is what I found in the 1$ bins. They have a Blacksmith shop display going on as well, cool stuff!
  20. I'm on the lookout for a copy of AIA, a bit spendy but I think it would be well worth it!
  21. What year would it be according to Trenton #s?
  22. I don't have access to it right now but this pic is the closest to showing the underside.
  23. What a cool gift!
  24. If you can load the pics on your pc (I put them on my desktop) then you can click on the attach file at the bottom of the frame when you are adding a post. Choose your desk top from there then find them and open one at a time. It's not real hard, just takes a little figurin'! Good luck!
