Does anyone have experience using Soybean oil for heat treating hammers and punches?

Well this year my project is in Missiouri, fireplace doors, railings, and more. Should have photos in the spring. I look out the window where I am staying and I can see elk and buffalo. Almost like home.

I have seen a hammer made like this with the air cylinder added. It work quite well and didn't take to much to get it running.

There's lots of uneducated guesswork and crap on the net besides the good material. Wise words from a very knowledgeable smith. Frank has been around the block a few times.

That Doc is always good to get you going and then heads to the house. Nice job on a handy tool.

Dan, Nice job painting and cleaning up this hammer. I had one of the last 100 lb hammers Little Giant made. It was made in 1977 and was in the crate until i brought it in about 1993. Sold it a few years ago and brought a 3B nazel.

Yes, I made the tools and stand to match the doors. I made the hinges and have bronze bushings in them. The doors swing open with one finger control.

Roughing it after the installation. We picked tangerines off the tree for breakfast and snacks. Can't get much fresher. Cup of joe in the morning. The pool was 92 degrees with city in the background. City lights from the guest house porch. I could use another commission like this one. The clients loved the fireplace doors.

Thank you for the nice comments. My clients were very pleased with the doors and were more pleased when they had a fire going. The shovel and poker are 1 piece and forge welded to the handle. I used 3/4" square for the shovel and poker. For the finish I pop the scale with a torch and wire brush. Brass brush highlights and then waxed with linseed oil, turpentine, and wax mixture. Doc, glad your shovel is working well. Always good to hear how my products are working.

If you are only going to make a few fixtures it makes financial sense to find someone who is ul listed and have them test your fixtures and put their labels on.

For some reason my font is stuck on 2 and it is hard to see what the heck I typed. Anybody know how to get it set on a larger size?

Double sided fireplace with similar doors on each side. Each door weighs approximately 60 lbs. Installed last week, took out old doors and put both sets in. Install took 2.5 hours. 40" h by 60" w
