  1. I agree, great first effort. The tongs might be a little rough but they work! I've definately seen worse. I like your anvil and vise stands. Keep up the good work!
  2. That was my guess too. I haven't spark tested it yet.
  3. sorry, photo didn't post. I'll try again..... 11 1/2" long 4" high 3 1/2" wide 42 lbs
  4. I found this chunk of iron at a local flea market for $5. I am planning to make a small bench top anvil out of it. It's 11 1/2" long, 4" high, 3 1/2" wide, and weighs 42 pounds. Any idea what it was?
  5. I have some "extra" materials so I'm actually going to build 2. I'm going to build a firebrick forge first and then one out of an old 20 lb propane tank. I'm experimenting to see which I like best. My coal forge will remain my primary forge.
  6. I finished my first propane burner today. I used Frosty's design and Phil Krankowski's directions found here- http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/12176-i-pumped-frosty-for-information-and-made-this/ now, to get to work on my forge!
  7. I like the retractable wheels idea. That looks like it would work great with a wooden anvil stand. I may try that myself!
  8. I agree with VaughnT, I wouldn't put it on casters either...even if the wheels do lock. When I need to move mine I just tip the stand a bit and move it with a handtruck/dolly. I have a similar stand to CurlyGeorge's except my anvil is secured with chains so it won't move when tipped. My anvil is a little smaller at 100 lb but it should still work just fine with a bigger/heavier anvil.
  9. Quick reply. Thanks Wayne! I'll definately buy from you again! http://www.waynecoeartistblacksmith.com/
  10. Nice inexpensive first anvil. I like your stand. Best of luck to you!
  11. I'm looking for a good source for Plistix 900 so I can finish my gas forge. Any suggestions? I tried Zoeller but have been unable to get in touch.
  12. I agree with Joshua M, hooks are a great first project and I wouldn't be too worried about upsetting just yet...it can be a little frustrating at first. I was lucky enough to take a couple of beginner blacksmith classes to get me started and our first project was J hooks. Great first project that you can actually use! Best of luck to you!
  13. Don't be embarrassed. This is a great place to get help when you need it!
  14. Not quite sure what is going wrong. I primarly use coal but I have used charcoal as well. I'm not familiar with the Elkhorn charcoal...I assume it's hardwood charcoal & not BBQ briquettes. I use balled up newspaper & pine cones along with the charcoal to get the fire started. Keep the air flow to the fire until you get it going. I personally wouldn't start with so much charcoal (3 lbs is a lot in my opinion). I would start small and add to it as you get your fire going. Just my 2 cents worth. Also, add your location to your profile. There may be some smiths close to you that can offer more help.
  15. FYI... "cwt" stands for centum weight (not century) which is the same as hundredweight. "Centum" is Latin for hundred. Personally, if I already had a good 100lb & 200lb anvil I would probably pass at $300 but if you could get him to $200 I would jump on it! Looks like a good anvil.
