  2. Hi, Often I get this request; “I want a small anvil, it’s for my son. He is young” . Does anyone knows? Is it easier to work on small anvils? Do one have to hammer less if the anvil is bigger?
  3. So I'm trying to learn more about forging. I'd like to get into tool, decoration, and probably weapon making. Everywhere I've looked has advised a larger anvil 75lbs+ but I can't seem to understand why. I understand the difference in types of anvil except for weight. Does an anvil weighing 150lbs have an advantage over the 100lbs of the same make, if so, what's the difference? Better bounce back or what? Everyone talks about how weight matters for your application but I've yet to read from any book, forum, or site as to why it matters. Thanks, Zack
  4. Here's another cheap/broke newbie trying to figure out if he should throw down $250 for this. I am very new to blacksmithing but am quickly learning that it sure is nice to use the right tool for the right job; so I'm itching for a "real" anvil. Anywho, could anybody comment on this anvil off craigslist? It looks halfway decent, owner said there were not any noticeable cracks and had good 'ping'. Not sure about rebound. I've only been looking in the market for several weeks, so I'm not really sure how much or how cheap I should be looking for. He's also about 2 hours away so it's helpful to know how close to the ball park he is. FYI currently I am using a 60ish pound saw doctors anvil a friend is letting me hit on, (little scared I might should not), or a railroad tie, or a 3/4' steel plate (which by the way I will continue to be thankful for...so I'm not that picky either). Thankyou for any input!
  5. i have the opertunity to but a 1cwt brooks anvil with a fitting hardie, the edges and the face seem nice, the seller is asking $300, i have some questions though. #1 what do you think #2 i am not familiar with what cwt is, my best guess id cent-weight so 100lbs? #3 he says the price is negotiable... what should i offer?
