  1. Is it a problem that appeared recently ?
  2. Do ya think it would weld if hot enough... In a billet under my 20T press It would become the most expansive scrapmascus ever seen ;)
  3. Hi Uri, always a pleasure to see your work Did you use pliers to 'push and pull' (don't know the rigth term, I'm French) the sides of the leaves or is it done by hammering only ? I'd also love to see a picture of your new forge...
  4. Could someone of the tire-hammering guys here tell me more about the spring attachement between the arms ? I know it needs to be adjustable to tune the spring tension, but does it need to be mounted on pivots or are the nuts welded solid on the arms ?
  5. I wish you good luck, I'm sure I'll love this post Keep going on, keep telling us, and please take some pictures ;)
  6. Didn't you talk about a video for your website John ? I'd love to see one of your 150# babies smashing some hot steel ;)
  7. So a dead blow is just a rapid treadle depress/release -> clamp/unclamp and clamp cannot hold if the treadle is released...
  8. That's a totally different system, the Kick ass is fed by an external compressor and doesn't cycle... It's more like an air-powered treadle hammer The data below are from Chinese Anyang copies. Ram weight (kg) / Ram cyl. diam (mm) / Pump cyl. diam (mm) 16 / 115 / 125 20 / 150 / 155 25 / 165 / 170 40 / 200 / 205 75 / 235 / 240 Hope it helps ;)
  9. Yeah I think I know what you mean... Wish for you this time will be looooonnnnnng If I don't, remember I'm French :p
  10. Yeah I was also thinking that tie rods cylinders could easily be double-walled to include a water cooling rig... Just add a car engine water pump on the belt, a HX and a fan... Do you think the air-cushion of large bore air cylinders would be enough when the ram will get back to top idling... Thinking loud...
  11. Daydreaming I was wondering what material to use as a bearing on the friction surface of a 'scotch yoke'... Do you think of a way to avoid overheating if using to air cylinders in a self-contained ? Patrick Pelgrom's air-scheme seems to be very efficient and is super simple...
  12. Frosty, I think he meams building a self contained... I don't know if it isn't harder building a self contained than saving a few bucks to buy a bigger compressor ?!? Gianluca, you found the right place, welcome aboard ;)
  13. Great, I was also wondering how to protect the ram if the guides didn't like lubricant !
  14. Ok, thanks Peter ! Oh, by the way, which grade do you use, I don't know if they are the same labeling in France but we can have grade 250, 500 or 1000, the latter should be best but also more expensive...
  15. Probably L6 if American steel, 75Ni8 (15n20) if Swedish steel. But there are more and more without nickel steel nowadays. Put some between two 1084 pieces, weld, quench, etch and rub slightly with steel wool under running water. If the inner layer comes brighter than the outers there is probably some nickel in.
  16. Do those of you running kinyon-style hammers with UHMW guides also use a lubricant ?
  17. Hi Rambo, could we have some pictures of the hammer and foundation, it would be easier to try to help you ! I'm sure I'm not the only one in here enjoying pictures of e-friends' big boys toys... Is there a way to lift the foudation out of its hole and put some more antivibrating stuff underneath ? And please all of you, excuse my English as I'm a French-frog...
  18. Deform 3D Have a look there, it's not a die-making software but I think it can help you to see how the material behaves in the die during the stamping process to select the better die design... They also provide a heat-treating simulation module. Solidworks has some specific die-making features I haven't used but I think you can make the die from the 'finished product' with it... Others here may know... Could we have some pics of your hammer ?
  19. With an equivalent tup weight a larger bore cylinder won't take more air as it will need less pressure to lift the weight... A longer stroke would...
  20. Nearly the same one on a video from Phoenixhammers : http://phoenixhammer.com/images/toolchange.mov
  21. Hi John, I never miss one of your posts on the farwest's as I'm willing to build myself an air-hammer with a different air-sheme from the typical Kinyon and am still waiting for the video you sometimes speak about there I'm French and as my English is not perfect, sometimes my words don't exactly translate my thoughts So don't see here any kind of aggression or industrial spying, I'd just love to see one of your monsters at work ;)
  22. Yep that 3B surely moves some metal If the friend of mine who shakes the sledge see this pic, he won't strike anymore : STRIKER ON STRIKE that would be a problem :p
