  1. another pic front view, the plate is about 3/4" steel, the side support is 3/8' do you think it is solid enough or do I need more building up. I had never built up so much, the steel got so hot I was melting half way through the 3/8" before it dawned on my what was going on, so very ugly welds.
  2. I live near bethany beach, I have formed a top die that will fit on the wedge, taking off the old wedge was a lot of work. I am still needing it as a log splitter. I wanted to get the bottom die high enough so the ram doesn't have to be on the ground so to speak. I have an old anvil that brings it up about 10 or 12 inches but ideally it would be 24' or so. For now I will use the bottom plate of the splitter, or the anvil. I mostly want to see if this is worth the effort to do. If I decide it is then I will need to convert the pump to electric or something instead of using the tractor. For now I want to use it to draw out the larger diameter stuff to save my arm. thanks for the help. here are some pics
  3. just a thought, bathroom fans are pretty cheap or easy to get used, I think they might start out at 50 cfm. I actually use one for a wood fired forge out back. Actually its a bid bottom of a boiler that I use for lots of stuff including cooking. But when I am hanging around out there, I throw some steel in the fire and I have an anvil with no horn I got for $25. Anyway the bathroom fan has been outside for many years now and has worked fine. I agree about the dimmer switch, could work or not. I believe the dimmer switch chops voltage , so it goes to say 90 volts and drops out to 0 and then back again. So its not a complete wave form. the speed control sends the full wave form with a 90 volt peak. So small shaded pole motors will probably work, but split phase won't as well as larger amp draw... Its been a while I looked into dimmers so I could be off on that.
  4. you can make a knife (not to be useful just for the looks) anyway just for the practice and its cool?
  5. Kind of a nutty title, but what I am looking for is ideas for making an anvil for the bottom of my hydraulic log splitter for forming iron. I have seen some things using square tubing in tubing welding plates together and was wondering if anyone had some ideas on this. I am figuring its a ten ton press , so maybe 8" diameter? I am in the dark here on what is required, I will look for something that is already partly made. I will want to have it to take dies. thanks for any ideas and help in putting this together. kevin
  6. lots of info here, you will enjoy it. Have fun!
  7. I have heard the term, "hand burner" what would you use that for exactly? TO heat something you are carving or build a temporary forge? thanks kevin
  8. I sent a email to f & G and have not got a response back. thanks.
  9. thanks for the replies, I can see if you are running 4 burners you would need something with a higher volume output. I won't be running more than 2, I went to lowes and looked at the hose, they wanted $35 for it. Any ideas where to get that cheaper? The hardware stores around here don't sell the propane valves that are adjustable. thanks. kevin
  10. rivets are fun to make and as you have seen almost anything can be used. For wooden handles over flat metal ( like a knife) solid #6 copper wire works good cold and looks nice. kevin
  11. the problem with burning it off is you are putting some pretty nasty stuff in the atmosphere that someone is going to have to breathe down the line, no easy solution there, wire brush is better I would guess, maybe some chemical would get it off, no good way. I have a lot of galvanized stuff and now wondering what to do with it. all my car springs are totally rusted and the paint long gone! kevin
  12. you can't have pressure without temperature, they go hand in hand. Find the temp you expect the tank to be and then the pressure, It has no (almost) relationship to the amount of gas in the tank, unless the tank is so empty it can't expand to the fullest amount. the tank can get over 200 but it would be getting pretty warm, here is temp pressure chart for propane. as you can see it boils at a very cold temp, so don't spill any liquid on you! very similar to refrigerant r-22
  13. you can get nice discs from farmers, they start out fairly large and they wear them down to 8 to 12" or so, plenty of good stuff there, including those curved chopping knives the added benefit they are already thinned out at the edge!
  14. Is there any reason you can't use a co2 or acetylene regulator? I have a couple around. thanks kevin
  15. I have looked on line for the fisher 67CH-743 regulator, but came up with a lot of time wasted. where can you order them on line? thanks kevin
  16. sorry I can't help, but what is a (laser term.)
  17. thanks looked up the link and the info, sounds like fun, I will try some out next time i'm out! Need to get some rock somewhere, I live in the land of no rocks!
  18. Its generally a layer of copper plate then nickel then chrome all fairly thin, it would just come off when you heated I would think, and toxic.
  19. I just got a t-rex and its a powerful burner.
  20. I was thinking of doing this also but I was going to tig them and then turn them down.
  21. and how many gpm would you reccomend for doing that, thanks kind of kicking around this idea, any help would be appreciated.
  22. what would be a good working pressure/ tons for using a ram for drawing out steel, sort of like a power hammer? and is it a feasible way to do that? thanks.
