  2. Thought it was yourself Owen, been a long time since I had a decent neighbour like I had a Chelsea back then. Hows the guitar cases doing these days (soggy probably!)
  3. Thats a friend of mines Sahinler and the Massey on tother end.
  4. Had a good day, commission for door furniture, made the master in mild, case hardened, made swage tool, forged blank in bronze, reasonable result but lots of possibilities ! Thesmoother of the two was made yesterday, so the good Friday day refers to the textured one.
  5. A rough 600sqft witha pleasant view of the Wicklow hills out the door!
  6. Was that the hammer that came out of the Fletcher Myburg homestaed,?
  7. Sam, When I was studenting at Hereford I was in Ludlow one day and taking place in the castle grounds was a fair with people dressed up in medievil costume, blacksmith was there pole lathe you know and a guy making clogs, leather wooden soles. I was checking out a pair of green ones and he asked me to try them on. I asked the cost he said try them on, i did and them i asked again, he said do they fit, yes they do. I got them for 20 when they should have been 65, they were a commission and the customer didnt like shade of green. That was 11 yrs ago, i wore them 2 times and i would have needed blinkers if id have made it three. This post has inspired me to pick up the courage and try them out in the forge,,,,, ahh but they are currently in the mother in laws in denmark...as sure not to worry tsk..tsk..ahhemm! ;)
  8. It is I agree a beautiful work, anticipational qualities exist in witnessing the gradual opening of the closed flower. Stunning.
  9. Cheers for all that, I am pleased with the results, small work and fiddly mind, looking forward to getting to grips with larger scaled material. Yes the bronze rosette started out as a 40mm disc of 10mm thickness. The tool that they were stamped into was quickly prepared with a slitting disc 1mm thickness and a single heat with 6 taps of the hammer ..result (credit given to my wife here..its her discovery) . The bird elements were 3 pieces welded together.
  10. Thanks Fe, I really love working bronze, but because of cost, large section is hopefully a thing of the future. Its a lot more malleble than steel so textures can be really good especially with high spot polishing. Tig welds good also and then files easy because of its softness.
  11. Some recent work, just to fit the mesh, steel and bronze.
  12. Lovely piece of kit and well driven, I say the same,. more movies please.
  13. Hey, you smokers out there ever have one of those days when your lighters dead and all the matches are damp?! Previously written: I witnessed a Dane hammer on a section of 10mm round and it was cold to start off with, up till a point when his cigarette was lit from it. Ahh the beauty of friction So today being damp, no lighter fuel and the smallest stock available 80mm round, 16 hours later banging onthis thing from cold... wayhaaay ... everybodys coming here for a light now
  14. Forgot to mention that was hand forging. They like their snapps and fish mind. Same here?!
  15. Yes the news is brilliant, im well happy. Friction.. take two pieces of material, take both out from the forge both of the same temperature, lay one of them down on the anvil and forge the other. Which one of them remains the hottest, not the one lying down. I witnessed a Dane hammer on a section of 10mm round and it was cold to start off with, up till a point when his cigarette was lit from it. Nicely bizzare
  16. This hammer is my first and after five years in storage and digging and filling in, making gantrys, up and down, ive shared this here. Fired her up couple of months back Yesterday was cutting in some timber floor around the base of her and got thinking about getting the manual from John.N. I have known that it was down in power and John suggested the valve settings were probably off and there is some air escape around the ram, right! The treadle bar was hitting the floor of the base when heavy forging, so using a length of wood and in run mode instead of forging off the treadle I used the lever. Happy Day, a lot more bump there to be had. Took the treadle bar off, tweaked it straight, back together, lit the fire, hot metal, and watched the colour of the material get brighter (hotter), friction at its finest. Time for the party then.
  17. Looks the buiz, great work there. Was wondering what building in Ballard will it become attached to? I used to live in Ballard WS moons ago and liked it there.
  18. There are four v belts om the hammer I have. I was informed that at the centre of the belt pushing it down should involve approx one inch of movement. M
  19. John Nicholson (John N) based in Chester England is the owner of Massey. He is on this site regularly and if any one knows then it is him.
  20. Monstermetal That lovely hammer, looking through the thread wanted to say "good man", I know you havent bought it, but it looks like your goin to mighty efforts to sort the move out. This portraits the respect and appreciation for tools that where built, when quality and choice of materials were paramount. Great to see..similar climate...webbed feet..moss between toes..enjoyed Seattle irrespective:D
  21. Thats a lovely rose, I really hope it works the magic for you. Frosty It makes me really happy to see you back on track again. Inspiration comes in infrequent pelts, I forged a ring in bronze for her and split a walnut in half, carefully along the seam. Wrapped the ring and put inside the walnut, glued it back. Good response!;)
  22. Off the beaten track! Water freezing in a bosh of a tuyere can be treated with a rubber ball hence when water freezes and expands, ball takes the brunt of the expansion forces and not the cast iron.
  23. I prefer side blast. Having used both I find as soon as the BB starts to clinker up your air flow has been restricted and so forth. With the SB when the same happens the clinker gathers under the outlet of tuyere and doesnt interfere with the airflow for a longer period. To get a bigger fire i simply add more fuel. Either way hope your close to making a decision. Michael.:)
  24. Thank you Uri Best Regards Michael
