Hey Y`all,
Been working on my first hand hammer today. I started with a piece of 1.5"x1.5" inch 4140 4 1/4" long. I slitted & driffted the eye and started forging the rounding peen. I also forged out the the eye cheeks like Mr. Hofi does. I`ll keep y`all updated. I hope to finsh it VERY soon . Sorry but i forgot to take pictures. I`ll be making the handle from scratch, going cut the piece of dog wood to shape with bandsaw then sand to final shape.

That looks GREAT!! I really like it .

Propane is clean. It is also quick to get going and to turn off . Its more aviable to some ppl. and is good for ppl in cities and places they cant use a solid fuel.
-
Also what you cutting it with? I cut leaf spring all the time with abravise cutting wheels on grinders and my 14" chop saw , it dont take long.
-
Well it depends. On the propane forge , the size and the burners . On coal it depends on the fire mending and the quailty of the coal . Many factors play arole.

Just about every member of this website! The pictures of their projects are a constant inspiration.
Yeah I think larry hit the nail on the nail head with that!!! -
I would be sure to mention Mr. Hofi , Mr. Whitaker and the Habberman Family. Not very sure what you mean but if I was doing an essay they would be in it for sure. There are many other smiths that I would add but I`am not very sure about UK smiths. Here is a list smiths & people that inspire me the most , Mom & Dad for support of my craft, Wayne Coe, John Taylor, Jeff Phllips, Wendale Garrett, Kent Hepworth, Frosty, Ted T, Glenn, Mitch (MRobb) ,, Richard Thibeau, and to many more to mention

Nut sized is perefered. Before i go the coal I`am using i was getting large chunks of coal and busting em.

1st off you get coke from burning coal, its a great/clean fuel. I reckon it has higher btu then coal also. It produces hardly any smoke as to green coal which has lots of smoke. The coke has the inpurites burned out also.

Why dont you just make some sort of wedge? It sounds to me probally the SIMPLEST fix.

Okay, I`ve been building me a new gas forge and have 1" inch of inswol , then 1" of castable refactory on it. And I freind of mine was talking about getting ITC 100 to lightly coat the castable refactory , is there any big advatanges of doing this besides making it smooth?
Chris
PS should have pics of this new gasser soon. -
Thaats real neat. How long it take you to make it?
