  1. Sorry for the trouble , but I`ve decied to go ahead and build a tire hammer, cause of Ican get the stuff bout same as the helve hammer stuff and I think it`ll work better and be about same to build . tire hammer - Blacksmith Photo Gallery

My ram will be round like this one and going find a coil spring like this and the wheel that is on the motor shaft and turns the tire I can get machined for free just need to know the size i need for it .

  2. Oh Grant, throwing realism into schools is SOooooo politically incorrect!

How about crawling upside down into the belly pan of a Nodwell dripping with hydraulic oil and grease to weld up a failing weld?

Oh sure, I could talk about the snow melting off the drill and the fact that there isn't room in a belly pan for a skinny guy and what MY chances of getting out quickly in the event of a fire would be but that would be too realistic.

About the chance of burning to death in the belly pan of a Nodwell, I always had the rest of the guys standing by with fire extinguishers ready to blast me and then jerk me out by the feet if necessary. It wasn't a guarantee but it was better than nothing.

About weldor training, there are many different levels and virtually ALL your questions will be answered if you take the most basic industrial arts welding class. Art welding is a whole different thing and personally I don't consider it welding at all. I'm not dissing artists but proper welding means human beings can trust their lives to your results and that is NOT part of "Art Welding."

Aint that the truth Frosty, LOL. I started welding informaly being taught by my cousin ( a pipe/plate) welder. When I was about 10 . I`am currently get "formal" training at vo. tec. school. This coming up yr I`ll also be taking the maching classes also :)
  3. Hey yall,
Ive been doing quite a bit of heavy forging at my shop lately. And have came to the concuslion its time to build a power hammer. I have looked at alot of Rusty, hammer deisgns and am going build one and the ram will be about 45 or 55 lbs dependy on if i get sq or round stock at the scrap yard. I was wondering about the spring, how long should ai get about 50 inchs?, do I REALLY need to straighten it and wat is the advtanges /disadvatge of a staright vs. unstarightened spring? The anvil will be probally 4" solid sq. or round. So will the ram , the ram will be about 14" so that when the dies are at max. height I ll have about 6 inches between em. Itll have a 1 hp motor , I got a 1/2 hp free was going use for a 25 but decied to go ahead and get bigger motor and heavier ram. I got the metal for the frame free, I got a big stack of 4x8 x 5/16" I beam Iam going use fo rthe frame and have a lot of braceing so it doesnt flex much as possible. The base plate will be either 3/8" thick- 5/8" plate depending on price of the scrap steel. It ll be anorched down to a concreate pad and a piece of plywood in between. I also got a 10" in diamater pulley gave to me and think Ill use it and thought about make the pillow blocks ( fabing em up) . I am think of maybe getting the die mounts machined or may fab em up to be sorta like the Big Blus quick change die system. I am going today or tommorow to go get the anvil, and ram and the plate for base plate. Ill post pics as I buil it. My cousin is going help me build it ( who is a welder for a living) at his shop where we can use his big mig, stick , tig, and plasma. If needed and also where we will have room for lay out. We will be starting building it June 28th, but going ahead and getting all the materials all together.

  4. hey Y`all,
I was needing a hammer/tong rack for the shop. And I found a old rack out of a freezer and had some 1"x1"x1/8" angle . So I built a frame and tacked the rack inside the frame and made 2 mounts to built it to the wall. Its nothing fancy but should do the trick.

  5. Seems like a great learning process and a fascinating engineering and scientific challenge, but outside of that... why god, why? lol You could have a manufactured anvil shipped to the far side of the universe for what it will cost you to make your own of equivalent quality and weight. You can always get your anvil to come on a shipping container on a freighter and its not that expensive. My 450# anvil came 2300miles for only about $300.00 so unless you just have to build your own i'd check the shipping methods out fully before you give up.

I totally agree with Thomas here. If your going to weld/fab/temper your own anvil why not make something extremely exotic. Something that can't be found or mates with a very specific purpose. Why not make an ornate bridge anvil or something akin, rather then just make something that looks like the commercial equivalent only costing much more to fabricate.

Yeah I Agree with Avadon. WHY? Cause you can? I think it be best , if your just wanting you a anvil to buy a used or new anvil , and alot less trouble.
  6. Welcome to IFI!!! As with most anything it takes PRATICE PRATICE. Also you may want to add your location so maybe a smith close to you who can help you out.

  7. Thought this might be a neat thread topic. Do you have a shop pet(s)? If so where does it hang out in your shop? I have a shop dog, named SPARKY!!! He use to always lay next to the treadle hammer in old shop now he lays across from my anvil.

  8. Not unless some one else does. Like I said it heats up small stuff alright but I`am going start making hammer at my shop and want to use gas and this on aint right for that job , it`d be good for some doing stuff 3/4" and under.
