Tom , as most know I do things differently LOL . When I make a punch for punch HOT steel , I dont see a need in hardening it and tempering it, cause if your punchs through something thick and forget to cool off then you just drawn your temper out of it. By the way I make my punchs out of 5/8" 5160. Thats the way I do it , may not be the politictily correct way but it works for ME , and thats what I think is important that it works . Just my .02 cents worth.

Well going go ahead and shorten the tubing 2" havent cut it yet and got thinking and think thats what I needs to be done.

Anyone know about if I need to scale the main frame down 2" since anvil is 2" shorter than the plans? Needing a answer cause fixxing start working on it some more.

Well got a call from dad saying tire hammer plans came today. But i had quick question, see my anvil is only 34" tall should/do I need to scale the 5"sq. tubing (main frame) down 2 inches?

I think I`d go ahead and get the 335lb. Did you ask see if he had any 286lbers left? Thats the size I have and am very pleased, if I had had the extra I would get the 335lbs but the 286lb does GREAT for anything I`ve done on it.

I usally cut what I need with chop saw or cutting wheel on grinder and then get it hot and starigten in the vise and then tweek it on the anvil.

Saw a guy a while back who had made a donkey's head from one, he called it a jack hammer. No pictures of it, but maybe I can find one later today.
I`ve also done the same. Will get pics asap. What I did was bend the claws up , and then with my eye punch , punched 2 eyes -
Howdy! Welcome to IFI! I am over in east tn. In Wartburg, Morgan Co.

Well we got the base plate cut the holes for the bolts to hold it to the pad cut , and the anvil cut to height and 4 gussets cut and welded to the anvil and the anvil is welded to the base plate, I figure thats a good start. Got a spindle gave to me and need to get a ford ranger doughnut tire also my cousin gave me a piece of 5" sq. tubing to use as the main frame instead of the I beam. Pretty much waiting to get the plans before do much more.

hey Y`all,
I was visting a nother site and seen where they had a thread and smiths had stuff they had made and traded to other smiths for stuff they had made. And would like to start a small collection of stuff with other smiths Touchmarks. For example A blacksmith made somthing him makes alot of say tongs and wants another blacksmith`s style of punchs and that blacksmith is needing some tongs, they agree on the trade and each of em ship and both are happy ( so we hope LOL). I got to thinking if ppl stick with small stuff that fit in flat rate box it would be best for each other. When you have wat you wanna trade for certain item post pic of it and specs so someone else wanting it knows what they are getting.

I use 4140 when I make a hammer, do some searching for hammer materials and you should find lots of info.

If it was me, I`d get the bandsaw, no sparks, more versital. And you can put something big and be doing something else while its cutting. But dont try to cut Hardened stuff with it thats whena Chop saw is nice .

Gobbler, How big is the shaft on the motor thats the "drive pulley" is on , also is the drive pulley got a set screw throw it?
-
Mr. Country forge sir,
How big is your dies going be?
Chris -
LOL sounds like my cosuin LOL. Think going scale my ram down to 2 1/2" sq. solid cause other wise my ration would be all the HECK , it still won t be best ration but much better .
-
Th base plate will be anourched done to abouy a 5 1/2 or 6" pad.
-
I'd worry about "throw" if you are doing out of balance forging on a set of dies---like combo dies where you may work on one side or the other but not the middle where the dies change.
Twisting force has to go somewhere and will probably be the pitman tup joint. No problem if sized for it.
Thomas, How big would it need to be?
Also Gobbler,
How long is the coil spring you used? and how thick are the coils? would 5/8" work? -
Thats the design i`am going BUILD!!! I got all the parts , besides getting the motor and the spare tire, and the coil spring and I have a freind who said he`d turn me the thing that goes on the motor taht turns the tire for free. My ram will also be round, the guide will be out of pipe though. Thanks for the tips and such Gobbler.

Cbl,
Before I got my euro I had real hard time trying to find anvil because the ones I found where being sold by Collectors for new prices for BEAT anvils , You have reasonable prices but MOST I have came in contact with By NO means were reasonable and were being used a yard art and its heartbreaking to a someone who would USE it that someone has a anvil is letting it rust down and wont sell it at a fair price. My .02 cents worth.
