  1. my old corn knife/machete is a favorite tool. i have a lot of bamboo to deal with and it does the job just fine. just re-fitted a hand made oak handle on a hand crank corn sheller today along with a new hand drawn ash handle on a fellas hoe . this hoe is the old solid socket type. why in the xxxx cant we make good tools like this anymore??? buzz:confused:
  2. did'nt they have any big anvils.:o:D buzz
  3. thinking of picking up a couple of pieces of equipment from harbor freight. going to try and build my own 2in. belt sander/grinder from a buffer machine motor and while i'm at it snag a 1in. sander for $35. $100 total. not a big expense considering a good fixed blade tactical knife would cost about $75- $100. well, after looking over the Harbor Freight 1in. sander, ( not enough power) i decided to leave it, as for the buffer, came home without it it also but for a different reason. need to do some more homework to find the right parts like a 5"X2" caster drive wheel, and draw out some plans for fabrication or image of said grinder. always something.
  4. could you post some more photos. very nice looking wood. i want to see the handle and guard from the top and bottom. very interesting knife design. slim but nice size handle. thanks, buzz
  5. that ironwood handle is great, but the blade shape is killer. buzz

  11. what about this "3 phase 2 3/4 hp motor" you would need a converter for this set-up, right??? buzz there is a shop here in town that makes 3 phase converters>
  12. there is a cub cadet dealer near here. sooooo....:D
  13. hey guys, do you ever make draw knives? if so, what steel. heat treat and so forth?? what size is best or easy to make?? any photos would be very cool. also how do you fit handles and what wood do you use??? how do you make the little tang collars or do you skip this part?? thanks for the help, buzz
  14. Pam, you know what you are speaking of. but i'm sure you left something unsaid.???? don't know what it is you did'nt say?? buzz
  15. blows my mind. all the knives i look at on the web and even the ones i handle everyday, you make something of a work of art ,blows my mind. never ceases to amaze my eyes. beautiful. you just cant go wrong with killer stag like that. just knives. but only the best. buzz:D
  16. i'd love to show you my hulking gob of steel but i ai'nt got one. anybody who has a spare or knows of an anvil for sale or trade please get with me. i live in north missouri. some people pronounce it misery. buzz thanks for the photos and stories. i think i'm gonna go check the local junkyards for an antique heirloom anvil. you never know.:D
  17. "the way to make a small fortune blacksmithing (bladesmithing) is to start with a large fortune" LOL. true for any endeavor into the unknown. i am thinking of picking up a couple of pieces of equipment from harbor freight. going to try and build my own 2in. belt sander/grinder from a buffer machine motor and while i'm at it snag a 1in. sander for $35. $100 total. not a big expense considering a good fixed blade tactical knife would cost about $75- $100. soooooo...................... if i factored in all the knives i might make because i have these cool power tools, i could say these (to be built) knives will eventually help pay down this new stuff. this sound good???? buzz to help pay down some frustration, i built three oak mallets today. WHACK-BAM-BOOM BOOM. one thing i am sure of, is, simply working in the shop doing anything what-so-ever is payment enough.
  18. i dig. too much math for me. lol i see what you want. i will let the experts have this one. buzz
  19. yes, if anybody thinks of getting reach making knives. lol money is everything, art is for part time fun, hobbies are just hobbies. my father told me this years ago in so many words. my father was a very well educated educator/business man. he worked hard all his life, as a musician in high school dance bands and later as a music educator/teacher of high school students. he never earned enough for his talents and dedication. personally i worked too xxxxxx hard thru the 1980's and 90's, and my social life did'nt exist. sure i had more money than i could spend. but i was always tired burned out on the week ends and had no passion left for anything. even spending the money i earned. not so now. i enjoy the work in the shop. nothing " has to get done NOW " if i run into a snag on a project i move to something else and don't return to the problem till i'm ready. what a relief. in the old days it was gotta get it done NOW. no fun that way. as for the money. frankly i don't give a xxxx. i've talked with Ed Fowler, a real time knife maker ( me, i make knives for my own entertainment ) over the phone about knife making and his knives in particular. you might say "A KNIFE MAKERS PHILOSOPHY " the short version, he asks around $900 - $1,700 for his wares. seems fair enough to me. take a look at what he does to render a knife from start to finish. also i think he tries to live off his knife making income. if i ever get $50 for a knife i'm gonna splurge on a gallon of ben&jerry's. you can hardly make a knife for next to nothing, but you can bet there are some very nice blades being made for cheap by guys who love to make knives and i am one of them guys. man i hope i never have to make a living making knives. i'm no JIMI HENDRIX knife maker. buzz
  20. what Thomas said. been tryin' to come up with a version of that my self. here is a handy jig oupa made just for this you can pick up an inexpensive bar clamp from harbor freight , cut off the end ,weld on a slot end to hold the blade in and your ready to go.
  21. steel and blades and fire, all good:o buzz
  22. don't know if this would be of any use to you, but i have some fairly nice figured " crotch burled " walnut. if you are interested send me your address and i will mail you enough to handle that hunter you just made. i have plenty and seems fair to me to share this stuff. buzz
