Get a hold of Dan Linkenheld sooner rather than later, from talking to him yesterday, they are getting pretty close to starting. Hard to argue with $1000, give or take a couple hundred, for a power hammer, though.
that price is hard to argue with... but way too much for me or my family at this point. -
Before you start on the helve. I think I heard at the last OABA meeting that there are plans for a group build of tire hammers. You might want to look into that. A group build like that has the advantage that it ends up taking much less time per hammer than if the hammers are built individually. As well there will be tools used that you may not own and there will also be savings in bulk steel purchases.
that sounds cool! i will look for it -
i think for now i am going to build a helve hammer cheap+quick, then upgrade as i go
p.s the suggestions are great, keep them coming! -
so i got the 200lb anvil home, turned out to be 150lbs, I agrred to pay $90 before i saw it, it has some dings in the face that are about 1/4" wide and 1/8" deep, some nave been welded. About 2/3 of the way srom the step, just before the waist, there is a crack clean through the face plate on the edge (3/4" across face) and it has a little de-lamination. for $90 its not a bad deal... oh, and the guy threw in a seized 6" post vice that i got freed up a,d 22 sets of tongs AND 3 handled round punches.

I am always on the lookout for hammers.
put the word out with your local blacksmithing groups . I would reckon that a 15 year old will get a fair price.
its worth remembering that you will get your money back on a LG should you move away or upward from it. not so much so on a home made hammer.
that was what i was thinking, i want to be able to flip it for a better oe in a moments notice. -
you can use a slitting chisle (search it) to make the gap, then spread it with a punch or a wider chisle, then drift with a tomahawk drift and draw the chheks out
-
hate when that happens! i will keep my eyes open for more stuff that i cant afford LOL! i cant wait for the september demo/classes with brian brazeal!!!

I'll get "a round tuit" eventually.
HAHAHA i get it now... -
joshua.M I think they are round tuits, it is astonishing what can be accomplished if you can get one , sadly many people don't.
can i ask what a tuit is without sounding dumb??? -
so i have been doing more reading (yes i know how lol) and i have seen lots about wetting your coal/coke while the fire is burning to control it. What i am wondering is, when i got my first forge it's firepot was only about 1/4" thick, when it got hot i would wet it to cool it off... it cracked. so now i am on my 3rd forge (cast iron canadian forge co round firepot) and i was thinking about wetting the coke i burn to control it, but i am worried about cracking it.
So my question is, how do you wet coal/ coke without ruining your forge? because wouldn't a cast pot crack, and a fabbed one's welds pop from cooling too rapidly?
quite a novice question but i want to know what i am missing. -
hahaha ya, but im 16 so i really dont neeeeed to work, besides... i get chili cookies skating a hot tub and her moms home made butter tartes :)

If the screw and screwbox are in decent shape you can reforge the bent leg(s) back into shape; but probably not a job someone starting out wants to handle as it's a lot of very hot metal to mess around with.
How did you check the delamination? Some anvils have fairly prominent weld lines on the sides but no delamination in the interior.
i tested the lamination with my "anvil testing kit" a ball pein hammer, 1/2" ball bearing and a thickness guage for spacing magnitos on small motors, tapped it with the hammer *dong* hollow sound and very little rebound, ball braring dropped from aprox 1 foot rebounded 2", thickness guage on area where it looked to be delaminating and the cornger of the card slid in a 1/4" on the corner....pass lol
the screw was not good enough to warrant the $100 i offered and he said i was way off
i have never seen an anvil like this tho, it looked like a peter wright (edge on the feet) but on the step unser the horn there is a 4 on each side and nothing on the sides, not evern stone weight markings -
went to look at the anvil and post vice today, photos make them look better than they really are, tha anvil's face is starting to de laminate and the vice dosnt close all the way (screw copletely tightened) and the guy ***claimed*** to have an offer of 350, i said "JUMP ON IT! take the offer"

it didnt work!

i didnt take the pics, they were sent to me in an email, i am googling how to do it
-
unforgiven, i have no idea how to do that! lol

i have draw flied before, i got a new bench grinder with a 2/24 belt sander on the side, i was thinking of using that as a way of removing the worst of the scale, but i like the pickling idea

thanks guys, thomas i dont know how to make them bigger without making them fuzzy, if an admin could do it that would be great!
-
turns out i cant go i have to go to my girlfreinds dad's place for their annual skating/chili cook off/hot tub party, i guess i will see you in bellwood for the brian brazeal demo

well i have been lurking on the web and community for anvils and other tools and it payed off, i just need to pick up this 200lb that looks like a peter wright
cost (may want to sit down): $90
then i got another response to my ads with these: anvil looks to be a mousehole
the vice looks like a peter wright (closed female end in the shape of a bell):
i will be going to look at them this weekend or sometime near there, guy just wants the best offer (has received none) so he can get them out of his barn.... i also have a lead on a gas forge, farriers anvil, and bunch of tongs and other tools -
I'm glad that this post got a lot of support. Sadly I'm just a senior in high school with a very tight budget for college. If someone however wants to take a whack at this design, go ahead.
im in my 2nd year, and i have a semi equipped shop, accumulate tools and materials over time and it make the budget take it alot nicer -
i forgot to mention, this is my first attempt at a full tang blade
