  1. i have been forging for three years now and i am completely self taught, i am STILL hit and miss with forge welding one peice to another, damascus requires hundreds of 100% perfect welds to be strong and useable... what will you use for head? coal? coke? LP? natural gas?? waste oil? do you know what fulx is? do you know what a quenchant is? do you know how to properly anneal, normalise, harden, and temper? do you know the steps in forge welding off the top of your head and under pressure? you say you have good steel for making damascus, what is it? what are its propeties? what grade is it? dose your forge reach welding teperatures?

Not trying to put you down, but these are ALL things you MUST know before you try, i am sure that others on here can add more to this list
I have been forging almost every night for 3 years and have sunk a TON of money into this and have yet to try pettern welding (one more thing! what is the difference between pattern welede and damascus?)

  2. I agree 100% with stewart, if you PAY GOOD MONEY for somthing you are more likley to get a GOOD QUALITY TOOL, and you will respect it better because you had to WORK for it and not pay pocket change for a XXXX forge/anvil that you wont respect to the same degree

  3. I have been offered a Hercules power hammer for $500. The owner sais it needs work (new motor set up)and that it is around a 50-60lb ram and has been outside for this winter. It is the first hammer that is local that i can afford. I'll get some pictures for you guys soon! any advise is very welcome, i will try to answer any questions as well as I can.

Thanks guys! John, I am not sure how the PI will do it's the first time I have ever used it. this is a prototype in a few ways. Boy oh boy that pure iron sure is sweet to work. Randy, I have an electric stovetop, so it's got a little flat on the bottom to sit nicely, sure wish I had gas. in the future whenever I get my own place for good(or atleast for awhile), I want to build one of those gas burners like thay have at the chinese restaurant, pretty much pipe with a ring on top and a burner below it. Some even have foot treadle gas controls! The round bottom wok sits right in them. A trivet would be nice, maybe a long legged one. I seasoned it like any cast iron pan, it's pretty similar. Just put in some veg oil and heated it up a good bit. "Sourced" yeah...........like Randy said :D Who uses suchnice wide pieces of good steel to hold down a tarp anyway? I replaced them with rocks that did a far better job IMO  . Jeddly what is a swedish torch?

  5. My apologies mudbugone, I don't mean to sound offensive or short, my inflection through type has been called by some who don't know me personally as abrasive. I was posting my "this!" comment directed towards Josh, who i have had a running discussion about powerhammers both on this thread and off for months now. I deleted my comment as it was taken incorrectly, and i am sorry.

It makes perfect sense to suggest those that hammer by just those pictures, it's not ideal no but there doesn't exist perfect plans for everything, even the original blueprint was more a set of guidelines then a set of plans, seeing as how like most junkyard hammers are built with what is available to the builder you cannot really make a set of plans. It was more a teach a man to fish type thing hehe.

Please stick around and continue to contribute, it is welcome and awesome.

i do like the idea of that hammer, with my connections to the guys at my local steel supplyer i could probs get all the steel for under $50, with extra..... and i already have some 4140 for dies
