Is $300 a fair price for a 97# (0-3-13) Peter Wright anvil in fairly good condition? Any idea how old the anvil is?
i just baught a 186# peter wright in the same or better cond, with the original sale paperwork (its 100 years old this year) for $300 -
newbie question here, what is the point of heating the anvil
-
welcome to IFI easiest forge to start with is a brake drum
-
Looks like you have the idea down, Eric. I'm gonna try to reverse that design and make a bearded spike hawk, as soon as I get time. Looks good.
it works great i did it for the first time the other day just make sure when you are doing the head keep it as straight as possible it will save you fron a world of hurt -
i like them but i still like the idea of the pommel being the spike head i love working with them because i ca be soooooooo creative , knives, tomahawk. hooks, hoof picks and more to come

I would think about $150 plus shipping depending on what different/extra features you want? Let me know
is that just the firepot or the whole thing and wheeere abouts are you -
If you know someone that would be interested in a fire pot like mine, I would love to make some more.
At first i looked at buying one of the cast ones, but then i saw how much they cost!! WOW!!.....
what would be the price for that firepot? -
I am thinking that if you welded the drum to the bottom, the expansion from the heat may crack your welds. I use a sheet metal/brake drum forge for demos and I just let the brake drum rest in the hole that is a bit smaller than the widest part of the drum. That way when the drum heats and expands, it just moves up a bit higher. Gravity has yet to fail me.
ok i just need to get the plumbing stuff and i can hook it up then ill post pics -
Yes, no, maybe depending on details you have not provided---like how big/deep a brake rotor you are using---though most folks use a break drum rather than a rotor.
well its approx, 12" in diameter 4" deep, a lil small i think i got a brak drum but it seems too deep how would i make it a litle shallower to be able to get a hearth -
if i cut a hole into a pice of 3/8" checker plate and weldded a break rotor onto the bottom will that work for some medieum sized work or would i need to but firebrick all over the top to make it deeper

What he said. Buck a pound for a good decent sized anvil.
I just payed $1.6/lb for a never used peter wright 186 lb anvil its really nice guy baught it had a heart attack and its sat in his barn for 20 years -
just to let everyone know i have payed for the anvil it is now in my shop i will upload pics as soon as i get my camera back form my brother
thanks

Are you sure that is a peter wright? I think they have flat spots on the top of the feet. If that anvil has good rebound and sounds nice then that is a good price.
Rob
it is marked PW on the side and all reaerch iv done tells me thats what this is, besides it will be my first anvil
(iv already paed for it) -
A lot depends on the location. That's a good buy here and about $100 over priced where I used to live. You are WHERE?
ontario canada its a rareity to find a anvil in good shape in my area -
Hi i was offered a peter wright 186 lb anvil for 300$ ($1.6/lb) should i go for it it looks to be in good shape has a wrought iron body and a tool steel (hardened) face 1-1/4" hardy hole

my name is josh im 14 years old from ontario canada looking to start up have a coal forge need a new anvil but have a temporary one just 1 question right now, for my touch mark i want a bulls eye that looks like this

I called my mom because she knew what it was called. The term I was looking for was a "Portico." They are normally over peoples front doors, but you could make them anywhere. The other term is a wall-less pole shed. I do like the idea of doing half walls. I guess if I did half walls I could avoid some wind chill and also the caustic sun from burning in on one side and scorching me. I'm in central oregon. So does anyone have plans for anything like this or links to peoples little outdoor portico's so I can see what they look like. I'm hoping to have my forge under there and vented up through the roof.
i call mine a cabana its a post structure with a slanted roo we use it for the bbq and bond fires but i have about 150 sq feet not even a half turned into my shop -
i wish i had anvilites i onlt have a 25 pound 1 from princess auto and in ontario big ones are scarce if anyone has like a 100-150 lb anvil for a good deal i may be interested im just starting so i cant have anything super expensive
-
Well i like that people are havig such an easy time down there in the states lol. im up here in ontario canada and i have been forging for close to a year and a half and still have had no luck getting an anvil all i have is a 25lb princess auto anvil. all the anvils iv seen within a 100mile radius are up to 2.5-3 dollars a pound, but i guess i cant complain because i get 2000lbs of coke (burnt down coal) deliverd to my door for $600 (25 cents a pound and 100 dollar shipping -
Unless you are planning to offer free shipping it might be a good idea to mention the location. In your previous thread:"location is columbus ga".
where are you located?
