    went to the livestock sale today to check out beef prices, in the tailgating section there is a Mennonite guy who sells tool handles, i picked up 9- hammer handles for $50 because they were "seconds" (a little too thin, need more shaping, heart wood is off) and 3 sledge hammer handles for $20 and an 8lb cross peen sledge for $20. Not a bad day at the sale!

    How would Ironwood (Hop Hornbeam south of the border) work for a hammer handle? I have hundreds of downed trees about 4-6" diameter all over my property I was hoping I could use.

     

    Hey Noah, us Canadians have an advantage, find an old wooden hockey stick and that is your rough hammer shape! Cut to length, fit and you're done

    I want to hear the stories of your tools, how you got it, where it came from, what makes it important to you ect....

     

    Here is mine:

     

    My Dad is good friends with a man named Wayne who lives about 20 minutes from my house, I had a cast coal forge that was in really bad shape when I met Wayne for the first time, and through talking to him in my shop he mentioned that he had an old forge somewhere on his property. I quickly forgot about it until one day a year later Wayne had hired my brother and I to put some hay into his barn and Wayne asked if i wanted to see the old forge. He led me and my Dad out to the old sugar shack, where we found an old Canadian Forge Co. forge and blower buried in other misc. stuff. I struck a deal with Wayne and took it home. After dis-assembling it and finding every part to be in AMAZING condition I called Wayne to see if he had any history on the forge and blower..... According to Wayne, he bought the farm from the neighbor with the contents of the buildings included. I got their number from Wayne and gave them a call to ask, according to the man i spoke to, the forge was bought by his great-Uncle without telling his great aunt (typical blacksmith buying more toys) to be used on the farm, but when the uncle got it home, he went to the house, had a heart attack and passed away. The forge then stayed in the shack unused until I went and got it. 

     

    You know what that means? My forge and blower are an original pair from the foundry that had never been used (except for the mouse nest in the blower tube) until i got it. I had a blast lighting the first fire it had ever seen, and even more fun since then

    Must love dogs is right Glen. Humans and dogs have been pack for at least 45,000 years and that's the hard evidence. Dogs and I get along great, they like me almost as much as I like them. I've always gotten along fine with dobies but prefer Rotties, they tend to be a little mellower.

    If I had a daughter she'd never go out without taking her rotty with her. Take the dog or get locked in your room.

    We live by the credo, "if our dog doesn't trust you we don't."

    I have a 110lb male Rottie named Duke. He is the best shop dog i could ever have, sits on his mattress by the door and barks loud enough for me to hear if someone pulls in the lane way. If someone walks into the shop he is on their tail till i talk to them. He is also our house guard dog, he is schutzhund trained, so if you break in, he will show you where all the good stuff is, but don't dare try to leave the house without the release word.

    the home hardware coal comes from Thak (Robb Martin) in Flordale I have used it and it is nice, if you buy direct form Thak it is $40/bag with cuts for larger quantity, do a goggle search for Thak The Blacksmith. Or there is Frank Cipriani from ERI Trading, he is in Hamilton and has coal or coke by bag, truckload or ton. It is just as good as Thak's and i got 10 bags for $18 each but it is smaller pieces.

    How do you like making tongs?

    So i have been on a tong making kick and tried a new method, drop welding the reins. I have never done drop welding but I can stick a faggot/billet weld just about every time. Drop welding is way more fun, and i got a nice set of tongs out of it.

     

    so what is your favorite way of making tongs? welding? upsetting? drawing out?

    How do you do it? Power hammer? hand? jig?
