  4. How I have done it plug one end of the pipe so it doesnt stove pipe the heat to your hand Heat and hammer the other end closed bringing only the end of the pipe closed Using a blacksmith magician type tool fuller the pipe so you end up with a piece long enough to be the nut. This length varies depending on diamater of pipe. Heat the fullered area and drive it into itself making the bottom of the cap area. Use the fuller again to make the top of the cap. If you need a longer stem after the last fullering is started stick a piece of round rod inside and continue to fuller until it is tight. Using a hack saw cut only the pipe not the rod and you have a stem. You can start making the next acorn where you cut off the first.
  5. I agree with Steve Charcoal but dont use briquetts you need cowboy charcoal if you buy or home made charcoal if making it. Cant you use coal as a hobby fire?
  6. He is only heating 3/4 inches of the working end to critical heating This would be the sharp end of a chisel After he quenches the tool 2/8 to 1/2 inch there will still be heat above that area. He quickly polishes the working end and watchs for the color to run toward the end. When the color he wants is near theend he again quenches 1/2 " deep cooling. Again there is still heat in the rest of the tool. He polishes the oxide (color) off the working end and watches the color to agin run Repeating intil he has dont this 3 times or the color stops running

  12. You wont have to bring anything back as I and others plan to buy all the good stuff so we can bring it back 2010 ABANA had some tailgating but nothing like what Quad state has. More stuff sells on thursday at quad state than most conferences sells the whole weekend and the conference doesnt even start till Friday night
  13. propane forges can limit the size of work, cant heat a 1' wide piece in a 6" forge propane can scale the work more also But just light the forge, turn on the fan if has one one, wait a couple minutes till it is up to heat put enough iron in till it works you to death. Should be able to have one piece in the forge getting hot while you are working theother. Dont try that with coal or charcole unless you like seeing sparks as you piece burns up. With that said I use homemade charcoal and an electric blower. Forge welded 2' of 1 1/4" cable yesterday, planning on making a cable damascus hawk for an auction
  14. welcome to this group check out you local blacksmith group also. nothing like hands on help might be able to find some equipment for sale also
  15. A possible place for scrap plate would be large construction contractors the cutting edges. The problem is scrap is so high for so long a lot went to market already. I built a treadle hammer with RR track welded together for the anvil I once dug a 300# 6" or so round 3 ' long out of a dumpster. I planned to make a tire hammer with that. it was a jack hammer bit that fit a track hoe. Most likely some type of Shock steel. S7 possibly. RR car axels are about 6".
  16. can you scan the material data safety sheets or show a link to it. I googled the company and it said they sell differrent spikes but doesnt list the carbon I also googled anvil fire and one refrense said spikes grade 1 were a min of .12 C and HC were a min of .3. I have seen spikes that had a H and another letter other than C what does that make them other than a company identifier.
  17. NO matter what you heard or read there are no high carbon RR spikes
  18. Need to know the size material you plan to use. If for instance you are using 1/2" for both pieces you can slit and drift but the joint will be 1" wide If the upright is 1/2" and the horizontal is 1" by say 3/8" you can punch a hole and still have the joint 1" wide You can do a half lap and maintain same dimension, I think a recent hammers blow had and article on that joint.
  19. I have seen some of Peacock's hammers run and they are sweet and worth the money. Watched him forge a small anvil with a LG Depending on your welding/mechanical ability you might look into making an air hammer or tire hammer. You would not get 100 years out of either like a LG has but how much are you planning to use it. Hobby or full time ect. I know several people who have one or the other and are very happy.
  20. Welcome I live in S ;MN near Redwood fallsThe Northern MN group is having a conference end of April south of Bemidji The Central MN group has monthly meetings and some class. You already know about the guild If you were at the christmas meeting I was in the tye die bibs.
  21. Welcome to this group check out lama the blacksmith group a great bunch of people also
  22. My saymak hammer is set up left handed. Hand hammer I use a square head hoffi style hammer and use the face corners as the pien also for fullering/drawing so the pien would not matter to me. I would be better off with a rounding hammer pien enven though the hammers I use have a cross pien. I keep saying I am going to make a Brian Brazeal style rounding hammer but never do. Have a euro style anvil with a pein on each end so anvil positioning doesnt matter much.
  23. The symbol that is now considered to be a swatstica was used for good luck prior to Hitler. Triump made a trap with it on the pan. The Hibbing MN High school that Bob Dylan went to school was them in the floor as you enter the building
