    press idea

This looks to me like the same 20t jack madmike listed, only already in a frame. So IMHO yes it would make a good press
  2. Now I know I'm just not that bright, but heres a dumb question. what is the difference between a belt grinder and a belt sander?
  3. thanks for the info, I'm still up in the air as to which way I'll go, but I will be making as tool that wil see heavy use.
  4. HOw does a lawnmower blade sound for an ax? If i were to fold weld to form the eye...Would this NEED a bit added? or will this steel be ok to form the cutting egde as is? I know lawnmower blades differ from blade to blade as to what kind of steel is used, but as a general rule, would this work? or do I need to add some kind of tool steel to form a good cutting edge? I have a few broken craftsman wrenches I could use to make a cutting edge. But only if it is needed. lol....I scrounge for everything, even my steel.....I'm poor what can I say...lol

ok, thats sound like a bad thing the way you say it... what is the average working tonage for a small press, something the size this would make?

    press idea

I had an idea today for poor man's press, would this work? a screw type car jack mounted in a frame, with a DC motor hooked to the screw. the DC motor would make it reversable by switching positive and negative wires would this make a usable press? something like this sorry for such a rough sketch
  7. Pictures will most definatly come. If I can remember to take them I'll try and get some pictures during the process. If I forget(My ADDmight act up again) I'll atleast get some of the finished product. or the ruined mess.
  8. lol looks like I'm noit the only one who looks through chattanooga's craigslist...I thought I was all alone here in NW GA... thanks guys
  9. Nice forge design, The pictures came through just fine, if you ask me.
  10. I have lots of ash and little to no clicker to worry about. of course charcoal produces significantly less clicker than coke... or so I'm told. so far I've burned through 10-15 20lbs bags of charcoal with only two or three clickers the size of a quarter. either that or I'm just missing them when I clean out my forge. ....I have been accused of being blind before...lol
  11. soon I hope to make a small camp ax. I hope to make something larger than a tomahawk, but smaller than a full size ax. A camping/backpacking size ax. I'm just wanting to solicite advice. I have a charcoal brake drum forge, and soon I'll have a propane forge(if I get it in a usable condition). as for steel, I have some scrap not much to speak of yet. which is best, folding a strap around a handle and welding the ends together for the edge, with or without a tool steel edge. or is it better to cut and drift an eye. should I make it out of quality steel or preserve the good stuff for just the cutting edge. My skill so far is...I've never forge welded, and I figure this is a good project to learn on. simple because either fold and weld to create an eye or cut and drift to for the eye then weld a piece for a cutting edge. either way I get to weld. what do you guys think?
  12. I found this anvil or ASO not really sure http://chattanooga.craigslist.org/atq/1806510832.html I've already shown some of you in chat. some say it might be cast iron, I've asked for more pictures but no response yet. so these are all I have to go on. anyone have any insite.... the price seems right unless it's cast iron
  13. My shop is simpe wood frame 20x20 building skinnned with tin. no insulation no floor and as of right now the roof leaks. I need to redo the roof and add some structural support so I can seal it properly. the point of this.... I have no floor so when ever it rains the roof leaks and I get a muddy floor. I've been puttiong my ash and clicker on the floor to help dry up the mud. this has been effective to keep the mud down, but I still need to fix the roof. since we are all smiths, anyone know a good thatcher. lol
  14. WOW!! I hope to one day be able to make a letter opener of the quality and beauty of that sword. amazing work.
  15. I do have on one or two grill tanks laying around. As soon as I get the forge home, I'll check and see if I need a a bigger tank. If so I'll check with the local gas people and see what is available.
  16. you might be addicted if your wife makes you install a doorbell in an unusual fashion, with the chime in the shop and the button on the house so she can summon you with out walking out to the shop(or more accurately having the two year old follow her to the shop).
  17. some have sugested two or three grill tranks on a manifold, to get past the freezing problem. would you suggest that or a single large tank
  18. The forge, I'm told was made from a 10 pipe 18 inches long, has everything except a regulator. I've not got pictures of it yet. the email I got from the current owner is: I had a metal shop before moving to XXXXXXXXX four years ago. This forge was my last project before moving. I fabricated it from plans I found on the net. It has an electric blower and has never been fired. I'm asking $50. for it. Where I live I can't have a shop so it is usless to me. If you would like to see it, give me a call at xxx-xxx-xxxx. I also have a metal bender, Victor torch with three never used tips, asbestos gloves and a couple more items. Jim I've yet to find out what the "other" items are yet, but i don't need the torch, the bender and the forge however I am getting $50 each. as well as the gloves if the price is right.
  19. Well not only do I get to practice making a knife, I'm also getting a propane forge from a guy(an amazing deal $50) so I get to see how that differs from charcoal as well. AND now I have a good place to annealand HT my blades with out firing up the ol solid fuel forge(ie quicker and cleaner)
  20. Let me start by saying I do not yet have a gas forge. I have a guy who is selling me a propane forge minus the tank regulator for $50. Is this a great deal or what? I know I can probably make on for less or atleast close to that price. now for the qeustions. Should i get a standard single stage propane grill regulator, or should I get a 2 stage heater/appliance regulator? what kind of life should i e4xpect from a single grill size tank? I know these questions are probably better answered with more information and possibly pictures. I'll have pictures tonight hopefully, as for more information let me know what information is needed, Ill do my best to answer.
  21. I have the one ugly blade i alreay made, it can be my sacrificial (spelling?) piece. I'll let you know what i find out.
  22. I just found a great deal!! A guy in tennessee about an hour and half from me has a propane forge and a hydraulic bender for $50 each. I'm going to jump on this. I'll post pics as soon as I get some. he's supposed to send me pictures tonight.
  23. I only have one left it's a bit rusty The nail head was cut off, but only less than a 1/2 inch from the cut end. that is a AA battery for size reference I made a small blade to use in my shop, although it is ugly and the handle is just a wrapping of electrical tape, it amazingly enough holds an edge well.
  24. I found my local hardware store sells these nails. I would guess they are for concrete or block. the nails are approximatly 8 inches long, and suprisingly hold a descent edge. any idea what these nails are used for or what kind of steel they are made of? I'll try and post pictures as soon as I can.
