  1. it's been forever since i've gotten on the forums here, mostly because i no longer have internet service at the house. i recently got back into my shop for a couple commissions, and figured i'd share this one. Its a spear point hunting knife, 6'' of blade and 5'' of handle. 5160 steel, stock removal process, with Indian rosewood slabs for the handle material. I'm making this for a guy i work with at my new job (since March) at a tractor mechanic shop and dealership. he wants to put his grandfather's buck knife away so it doesnt get lost in the woods one day, so he hit me up. after some discussion, he gave me free reign, just wanted something with a longer blade and budget friendly. i went with stock removal so that i wouldn't need a lot of shop hours to get to the finished result. i got the blank prepped and my rough grinding worked out yesterday. theres a false edge on the clip, mostly for weight removal purposes, as the stock is 1/4" thick. further weight management will be accomplished by adding extra holes in the tang prior to slab fitment. the finish will be nearer to a 320 grit, for a lower maintenance purpose. heat treat to follow the wrapping up of my grinding.
  2. Cool deal. I'll be walking around in a black caterpillar trucker hat and answering to john, if anyone reading this happens to be there and feel like chatting.
  3. So I'm at this show here in Harrison, Arkansas this weekend. Supposedly the Arkansas chapter of blacksmith association is making a bit of a showing here also. Anyone from this forum attending this show?
  4. Benton, I just crammed it in there and then upset the end to keep it still. Thomas, your idea is far too sensible and efficient for me to do that. I must go about it the most difficult way possible. :D
  5. Cool deal. Thanks for the insight guys
  6. So essentially hit it with a grinder and compare sparks to that of a known alloy, correct?
  7. Maybe so. But if it isn't and I treat it as l6 it won't be have the same. Maybe I should cut a sample and give it to my friend who does ndt. Maybe send it to one of his pmi guys. Or I could just be less hard headed and test it myself. Sorry for just rambling and thinking aloud
  8. I have a few sections of band saw, about 12" wide X 1/8" (if I remember correctly) by about four feet long. No idea what alloy it is, and have yet to find anything definitive through google. Can anyone point my nose in the right direction?
  9. Thanks to this thread, I finally know what my Anvil is. A 65 lb trenton that had apparently been broken in half and then welded back together. Crookedly, at that.
  10. I dunno about that, I have an old gar harpoon at the shop that my dad has had since time immemoria. Just the head and swiveling barb. Maybe I should haft it and go garfishing...

Yes, I'll heat for hardening in the forge, quench in veggie oil. At 22 and a foot taller than my mom she doesn't smack me anymore, but she still has that option as she constantly reminds me. Lol

Thomas, it is unfinished. Ill be draw filing it flat and polishing it maybe tomorrow. I wonder if my mom would notice if her toaster oven would disappear and magically reappear in my shop... But I value my hands being attached to my body so I believe I'll just have to buy a cheap one.

Thanks Dodge, long time no see. it might tickle your funny bone to know that i've moved up in the world from a ford ranger to a ram 1500 :)
  19. Been working on this for a little while now, forged the blade on a whim about two months ago, and it came out looking rather elvish, out of a chunk of 5160. I finally decided on how i wanted my bolster and handle, so I got off my butt and got it done. Bolster is 1/8"x1" flat bar, same stuff i use for my little knives that have all seem to have disappeared... Either way. A dab of superglue held it to the oak handle while i fitted it, a little time with a jewler's saw, my trusty bench grinder and a file and now it fits flush to the handle. I'll pin the handle on after i heat treat and temper the blade and stain or seal the handle. Overall length is about 10".
  20. Gromgor, the stuff he chewed on wasnt plugged in at the time. Had it been it may have deterred the chewing...
  21. what year is that jd A you have parked out back? i have a '52 that my dad and i restored a few years ago
