  1. i was told by an engineer from temkin bearing that rollers that are barrel shaped are 52100. if they are straight or cone shaped they are most likely case hardened.
  2. to anneal " soften " steel you must bring it to critical temp and cool it very slow. hardwood ashes or " oil dry " work well. even dry sand.
  3. i talked to an engineer from timken bearings and he told me the ball bearings are 52100 and the spherical " barrel shaped roller bearings " are 52100.

  5. a book called " the hand forged knife" and " the master bladesmith" may help.

    try " texas knifemaker supply " or " admiral steel" on line.
  7. any tang adding should be done with " silver braze " not welding. welding causes too much stress in the steel. use a scarf joint
