Did Babe Ruth just let the bat do the work?? It is all based on mass and velocity.  To make mass (the hammer) work you have to get the mass moving.  Or it can't "do the work".

That stump is awsome!! It is a prize for the little lady on top of it.  Just make sure how ever you fasten her down that it will also complement the stand.

The caplet depression is under the anvil on the bottom.  Just part of the making of it.  If it is held tight on a metal base a lot of the ring will be out.  Does not hurt anything for performance just saves the ears.  Most of my anvils are on metal bases and have little ring.  They have great rebound. 

That's one way to repurpose a couple broke old anvils.

Maybe want to define a master.  Maybe no one answered because non consider there self a master do to always learning.

Great score on that anvil would love to have it.  Once you start hammering you will not stop.  You could forge parts to go with your engines.

I would not trust a five burner gas forge for $650 if I was buying it off eBay.  You have a coal forge learn to use it.  They have been tried and true for many many years.  You list all these tools but no anvil.  Learn to move the metal by hand so when you get a power hammer you know wha is going on and will respect the power hammer more.

Here is another vote for the 22-32 oz Estwing claw hammer.  My go to for framing was always the 28oz.  I used the 22oz when setting trusses.  When I was an iron worker I always swung a 6# short handled sledge.  

Who cares, rare or not, rare depends on where you are from and what your market is like.  nice looking anvil good one to add to your collection.  Would make a nice traveling anvil for demos.

around here from what I can see I would give $25-$40 to the farmer and $50 to $100 to the museum.

Thomas I understand the point of the ball bearing test and know it works.  I am not saying it doesn't.  My reply was just stating that I prefer to test with a hammer for that is what I use to forge and I usually always have a hammer in my truck or around me and not a 1" ball bearing.  

Thomas would you say that a one inch ball bearing is going to react different from a 12" drop than dropping a 2lb hammer from12"?  You can't use well it depends on where you are from do to the fact you know where I am from but it could be do to the fact we are more humid.  

Bottom line is how you test it is how you test it!! Like you will only pay what you are willing to pay no matter where you are from.  And you are only going to take what you are will ing to take no matter where you are from.    

Das I'm with you why mess with a ball bearing when you are going to forge with a hammer.  Would take a while to forge if we where just dropping ball bearings

Mine are all around 30 to 32 inches off the floor.

In Lincoln.  Just east of Omaha.  We had a blacksmithing swap meet in Kearney last Saturday and he brought enough parts to build 6 forges.  Just felt they would help more people that way do to the fact that they where all missing something any way.  PM me and I can get you contact info.
