  1. Hi all here is a shoe I made for a customer she wanted a shoe to use to keep the tension on the yarn of her loom. I asked her about putting something on the shoe so as not to rust on her and she said that anything on it would transfer to the yarn, so I decided to make the shoe and out of SS this way it won't rust and we don't have to worry about anything transferring to the yarn. I left some of the hammer marks in it as I like to see that it was hand made, I knocked the scale off and buffed it so it was smooth and would not snag. Hope ya like it.
  2. I have a customer that makes blankents and other stuff using a loom she asked for a horseshoe as they work out perfect for tensioning the yarn. So I took her request to the extreme, I made her a shoe out of stainless steel. I started with a piece of 1 1/4" SS octagon bar drew it out with The Little Giant then made the shoe. I wanted to keep some of the hammer marks so I just knocked the scale off and buffed it.
  3. Backyardsmith, I would be more concerned about thatsmith pulling my tooth after shoeing a horse, as I can tell you that my hands stink .
  4. Hey Frosty, That is why I don't remember the planes, I was only at the main terminal. Texas thought they grew them big they obviously where in denial as I know they grow monsters in Alaska. Backyardsmith, I am curious had they seen a horses foot look like a tanto? The confusion is that people see movies that have blacksmiths shoeing horses, they basically stereotype smiths and farriers together thinking they are the same. In the day of old it was true smiths had to do lots of jobs farrier, smith, vet and others some even played doctors on people as there was no doctor and a smith/ farrier had to have medical knowledge to help sick or injured animals which made him effective at helping people as well. Glad you liked the shoe.
  5. Nice shop I was thinking the same as Rusty. I have been wanting to do a jelly roll, that is looking good can't what to see the blade. Did you use a power hammer or do it all by hand?
  6. I seen a picture of a 30 to 40 lb hammer being used to weld anchor chain links it had to handles though. I think this is more likely what Bruce has suggested, they would not have to swing it very much to drive wedges but would need the brute force it would deliver to split rock.
  7. I remember that Kodiak bear that thing was a monster it was way bigger than the polar bear, well that was the way I remember it anyway . I don't remember historical aircraft is that new as in after the 80's?
  8. Hi Phil, If the chain has a bunch of crud, I will soak it in solvent to get as much of the crud out as possible then I fold the chain on its self. This is where some guys do different I weld mine others will tie it together with wire. I weld a piece of rebar on it so I got something to grab a hold of. You also need to keep in mind that you want to hit flat with the link and not on top of the link, if you hit the top of the links they will come apart. I bring it up to a red heat bring it out and flux it well then back in I then bring it out at an orange heat and just start to compress everything a little (just to tighten up the billet for the first weld) I will brush then reflux back in bring up to a welding heat (I like to let it soak a few minutes once it reaches the weld heat) I then bring it out and with firm flat blows start to weld when the heat starts to drop brush flux and back in and continue until fully welded. Make sure your anvil is hot as it will draw heat from your billet very fast. hope this helps.
  9. Ron, Find a farrier supply shop they usually have coal. $42.00 a bag is expensive. I pay $14 at one shop and $25 for really good coal at another. Try here as well The coal I like is Cumberland Elkhorn coal and coke out of Kentucky that is the $25 dollar a bag you can order right from them I have not yet but it looks like I am going to have to as I live now where there is little coal to be had.
