  3. To to IForgeIron.com > search type in the subject your are interested in, for instance "tongs" click search You get some good hits and some strange hits, but that is the way search engines work.
  4. Light meters used by photographers will measure the amount of light. Some are calibrated for f/stops, others for lumens, foot candles, etc. Even an old stype camera will give you some indication by looking at the f/stop and shutter speed from one area to another.

  7. Pulling the fire out of the pot means just that... pulling it apart and out onto the forging table. With good coal it usually dies out rather quickly. This is not OUT-OUT. Clinker or some of the pieces can still be hot enough to re-ignite with a little air. Pull the fire apart, lay it onto a table to cool, and clean the fire pot Remember those HOT coals in the ash bucket under the ash tube? What about the hot embers in the ASH TUBE? They are just waiting to cause trouble the minute you forget about them. All this goes into a 5 gallon bucket of water. You REALLY WANT to take a chance to prove your method of shutting down a forge is always right? I would rather explain why I have a bucket full of muck and 2 inches of water over top anything that used to be hot.
  8. We ask that folks spread the word about IForgeIron and she has. Please thank Amy for us.

  10. You both are on the list. Keep an eye on him and the keys ready.
  11. I meant the key that tightens the drill chuck to hold the drill. I had in mind either the hand held drill chuck key or the table top or stand drill chuck key. I will edit the title to correct things.
  12. The IForgeIron site is set up so that the next post reactivates a thread, and brings the thread back to the surface. This thread that was started May 18, 2005 and last posted May 30, 2005. It has laid dormant in the IForgeIron archives for 3 years. In this case the thread discussion progressed to where a moderator felt their presence was needed. IForgeIron DOES NOT hide these things, IForgeIron does not cleanse and sanitize the logs, and you can find the ENTIRE DISCUSSION from the first question to the last comment in ONE PLACE for review. Due to the ;apse in time and the sensitivity of the discussion, it would be best if Tom's question were moved to a new thread so the suggestion could get the attention and respect it deserves. I will close this thread to posts, which is something rarely done on IForgeIron, so folks can concentrate on Tom's suggestion. This thread will still be available for review and reference if anyone has a question about bending. Bends in Gates
  13. I pull the fire out of the forge and put ALL the used coal, coke, ash etc into a 5 gallon bucket of water. This cleans the fire pot for the next forge session, but more importantly, kills any fire and any hot embers. (I have had the fire still burning in the forge for 4-5 hours after the air was shut off and the forge closed down.) The coke and coal can easily be separated from the water, leaving the ash and clinker behind. Just dry it out on a table or tarp outside in the sun. I sleep very well at night knowing everything that was hot is under 2 inches of water.
  14. Great interview Dan, You handled the interview very well.
  15. How much light is needed in a smithy or a work shop? Is there a preference between incandescent and fluorescent and metal halogen? How much light is needed to work? Anyone out there that can suggest light measurements in lumens or foot candles or whatever, or some way to know there is enough light?
  16. IF your electric welder is tethered too far away from the electrical outlet, which is better: to insert a properly sized extension cord between the wall outlet and the electrical input to the welder, to purchase an additional set of leads to extend the reach of the welding cables? If this is the choice, can you use the same size leads as an extension? Or do you need to purchase heavier cables to carry the longer distance and do the heavier cables need to be in line first coming off the welder or can they be last in line just before the grounding clamp and stinger?

  18. IForgeIron.com > Getting Started IForgeIron.com > Lessons in metalworking > Blacksmithing IForgeIron.com > GS0003 Blacksmithing Groups We have blacksmiths that are younger than 14 years old that have presented Blueprints on IForgeIron, so age is not an issue. Your desire to succeed is a much larger issue. Read and follow the suggestions. Start with what fuel is available and build a forge to use that fuel.
