What did you do in the shop today?
The idea is to stop the radiant heat with the air gap to keep things cool before it gets to the wall.

What did you do in the shop today?
Yes, a empty space between the insulation and the cement board. Seal off the insulation with something like drywall, sheet metal, corrugated tin etc to keep it from getting dirty. Depending on the type insulation you use, pink fiberglass insulation will shed insulation dust or particles that you do not want to breathe. Other types of insulation may be a fire hazard if it gets hot. Then leave an air gap between the material and the cement board. At this point we should ask what type wall construction and what type insulation you are using. The air gap creates a natural chimney to cool the cement board and keep the wall cool.

A anvil I inherited
After light use of a wire brush, hand brushing will do, coat the anvil with BLO (boiled linseed oil). Come back a day later for a second coat. It may take a day or so to dry out but be patient.

Temporary stand
For the log dogs I use and how I use them, one chisel end is N-S the other is E-W so they dig into the grain of the wood.

Temporary stand
Log dogs are great tools and easy to make.

Shaina When you finish the twist, lay it on a flat surface and hit it with a piece of wood to straighten things out. The twist itself is controlled by even heat and even twisting pressure. As JLP said, clamp one end and twist the other.

Vice Restoration w/ Electrolysis
Electrolysis is for removing the rust. Spray the frozen parts with a 50/50 mixture of ATF automatic transmission fluid and acetone or a good penetrating oil. Be patient. Try to move the parts every day or so and when they do move apply more penetrating fluid. Then move the parts only a little bit to work the penetrating fluid deeper into the joint. Be patient. Once free, remove all the crud you can as electrolysis removes rust, not crud. A pressure washing may be in order. The cleaner the item, the better the electrolysis works. Check the process and brush away any crud so you have good metal and good electrical connections so the electrolysis can work.

New Anvil ID and Use
The anvil is a tool. You can use it to form many things such as copper, brass, etc. just be sure to annealed them if they work harden. I heard my anvil being used and it was a thump, not a metal type noise. Upon investigation it was being used to crack black walnuts for cookies. Worked just fine and the cookies were good.

Extra blows
The empty blow of the hammer to the anvil is to keep the rhythm of hammering for the blacksmith. When you are drifting, there is much more time and contact between the drift and the hot metal, so the heat transfers to the drift. Cooling the drift after each 3 hammer blows keeps the tool cool and at working temperature.
