eyrian
Wikipedia's article on sundials has the formulae you'll need to find the spacing between the hour lines. Or were you looking for something else?
Mark Aspery
Has anybody got any information about how to make a sun dial? The book I like is 'Sundials" by Mayall and Mayall. Originally published in 1938 and republished in 1973. It covers all the formulas for Horizontal, vertical and inclined sundials.

Jura T
Most of the smith made sundials I've seen are equatorial bow sundials. Here is some information on those:How to build an equatorial bow sundial?
Grant
Good morning Philip There are a couple of versions of a bowstring sundial in the September 2004 addition of the Blacksmith's Journal #164. I have not attempted to build it; however it is on "The List". Issues are downloadable, some clubs have copies to check out, and I have found them in public libraries, I usually needed to use inter library loan. Mark Aspery
Take a look at a Analemma sundial. It looks like a figure 8 sketched on the floor or other surface. It reflects the march of the sun on a rotating (inclined) sphere in elliptical orbit They are a little easier to build and you can have a lot of fun with the numerals as you can really spread this sundial out to cover some square footage. The gnomon is usually vertical

civilwarblacksmith
If I get the chance today and can find the how-to, I will put it up here. Might have to set it up in the gallery. It was made by Bill Clemens from our guild and put in the newsletter. Bill is an incredible smith.
