MetalMuncher
Hello everyone. Just a quick question about soy oil as a quenching medium. Will it work? I have seen Tai Goo's crew use canola oil, but I can buy soy oil for really cheap here and its nice and clean(as opposed to used motor oil:() Any help is more than welcome! Thanks guys. jayco
I think soy oil is just vegatable oil. Lots of knife guys use it as quench. It's also an ingredient in some finishes. And yes, veggie oil is a lot safer to use than used motor oil!
MetalMuncher
Thanks jayco! I forgot to mention the term "vegetable oil". I also thought it would be safer. God bless!
Frosty
check a cooking site and see what it's smoke temp is, the higher the better. But the short answer is yes, it'll work fine. Some veg oil is smokier than others. Frosty
brianbrazealblacksmith
I've used peanut oil for quite a while with no problems, but when I ran out and added the cheapest vegetable oil I saw in the store I started having hammers crack after only 10 hammers. I believe the oil broke down that quickly. I'm making one and one half to three pound hammers, and quenching them in 3 gallons of oil. That's what I take on the road. MetalMuncher
Thanks frosty, I'll give it a go and see how it works. I think it would be ok for 5160, just checking in to make sure. Thanks dudes!
Chuck Richards
Yes I use peanut oil. The highest smoke point food oil is called camellia or Tea Seed Oil. it has a smoke point of 486f, refined safflower is next at 450f then refined soybean at 448f refined peanut falls in at 444f. The cost of the camellia puts it out of reach for most $60/gallon.
TCooper
Has anyone tried that "goop" quench in Goddard's $50 Knife Shop Book? I think it's a mixture of paraffin, transmission fluid, and meat grease.
