  1. Am I the only one stuck out here in western KY? Just me and the ducks.
  2. Here are some pictures of it also. I definitely don't want to tear it up as it was my dad's.
  3. Not trying to sound too stupid here but, I have a rather large vice that has a decent sized flat spot on the back of it. Would it be o.k. to use that for an anvil?
  4. ptree, jayco, made it through this one unscathed hope all is well on your end.
  5. Not to mention it's WAY easier to get all those scratches out while it's still good and soft.:)
  6. Hello all, I have been making knives for about 15 years using the stock removal method. Forging has always fascinated me and due to setting up a new shop I now have the room. I'm looking for any advice. Also every book I've looked in and read shows a small brake drum forge and a railroad track anvil, is this what I need to start with. I was thinking of building a gas forge, but after reading through this forum I'm not sure which direction to go. Thanks, Troy
  7. Has anyone tried that "goop" quench in Goddard's $50 Knife Shop Book? I think it's a mixture of paraffin, transmission fluid, and meat grease.
  8. Yeah, we stayed pretty warm. When the power line fell to the house it somehow managed to open the valve in the oven and let gas pour out. After plugging the line, we broke out the old Colman stove we used for heat treating so we could cook. Fired up the lanterns for light. So we stayed pretty comfortable. We were pretty lucky the old maple in the back yard didn't fall, we just replaced the roof from Ike's aftermath. I think I'm gonna get that cut down, twice in one year I've sat there sweating, watching those branches.
  9. I just got my power back yesterday whew... 10 days of roughing it. They're telling my grandpa 3 more weeks, as he has 4 poles down in the field. It looks like somebody set a tree bomb off here in western KY. Oh well, at least we won't have to top and limb the trees we cut for firewood this summer.
  10. Found the site while searching for plans to build a gas forge. I think I'm gonna like this place.
